2 in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. 3 Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. (Daniel 9:2-3)

He knows that according to Jeremiah 29:10 the seventy years of Jerusalem’s desolation are almost over. Yet he understands the conditional nature of certain prophecies (Jeremiah 18:1-10; Leviticus 26), so he fears that perhaps because of his people’s sins their time in exile may extend to 2300 years, vss. 5-6, 15, and 16.

These things weigh heavily on his mind, so he intercedes in prayer for his people. Though Daniel was a devout prophet, he identifies himself with God’s rebellious people.

18 O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. (Daniel 9:18)
God does not hear prayer because of our righteous deeds but because of His great mercies.

21 yes, while I was speaking in prayer, the man Gabriel, whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning, being caused to fly swiftly, reached me about the time of the evening offering.22 And he informed me, and talked with me, and said, “O Daniel, I have now come forth to give you skill to understand. (Daniel 9:21-22)

What was the time of the evening offering?
The evening offering was around 3:00pm. This was also the time that Lord Jesus, the perfect lamb of God was sacrificed for the whole of mankind.
According to our understanding evening would be around 6pm. However, for the Jews it signified the end of a day and the start of another day. It is significant that Gabriel the angel of God came to Daniel at around this time – the time of the offering.

Every time you bring an offering to the Lord, you capture the attention of heaven. Angels move into action on your behalf.

Prayer:
Father, release Your Holy angels who would give me skill….
..to understand
..to pray
..to do the right things at the right time – always
