Jonah died in the fish’s belly.  It is amazing how many persons think that Jonah lived in the fish’s belly. How do I know that?

“Out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
And You heard my voice. (Jonah 2:2)
‘Sheol’ – the place in the heart of the earth where Lord Jesus went

I went down to the moorings of the mountains;
The earth with its bars closed behind me forever;
Yet You have brought up my life from the pit,
O Lord, my God. (Jonah 2:6)

I went down to the bottoms of the mountains; the earth with her bars was about me for ever: yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O Lord my God. (Jonah 2:6 KJV)

Jonah’s soul was in the heart of the earth three days and three nights exactly as Christ was in the heart of the earth three days and three nights.

For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:40).
Jonah’s body was entombed in the fish’s belly, while Jonah’s soul was in the heart of the earth. Lord Jesus’ body was entombed in a rich man’s tomb while His soul was in the heart of the earth.

Jonah was resurrected and his soul was brought up from sheol and re-entered his body which was in the fish’s belly.  Jesus was resurrected and His soul was brought up from hades or sheol and re-entered His body which was in the rich man’s tomb.

Jonah was then seen alive and preached to the people of Nineveh.  Lord Jesus was also seen alive and preached to His disciples.
38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. (Matthew 12:38-40)

The Bible tells us that Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites.  Jonah’s body carried the marks of his death.  His body was in a fish that tried to digest him for three days or 72 hours.  Jonah probably had no hair anywhere on his body–No eyelashes, no eyebrows, no hair on his head or on his body.  His skin must have been wrinkled and bleached by the powerful stomach acids.  He was a sign.  He had been resurrected, and it was obvious!

“For as Jonah was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of Man be to this generation.”  Luke 11:30.

Lord Jesus also carried the marks of His death in His body.  Jesus said, “Behold my hands and my feet that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me have.”  (Luke 24:39).

Thanksgiving
But I will sacrifice to You
With the voice of thanksgiving; (Jonah 2:9)
Thanksgiving is a sacrifice

So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land. (Jonah 2:10)
everything that has swallowed you, let the LORD speak to it now. You are coming out free in the name of Jesus.
