And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2 This census first took place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3 So all went to be registered, everyone to his own city. (Luke 1:1-3)
Who was Quirinius?
The Census was taken during the reign of Augustus (27 BCE – 14 CE), when Publius Sulpicius Quirinius was appointed governor of Syria, after the banishment of Herod Archelaus from the Tetrarchy of Judea and the imposition of direct Roman rule.
And she brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7)
Did Mary have other Children also?
Mary did have children
The term “firstborn” suggests other sons born at a later time. (Contrast “only son” in 7:12)
Shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night (Luke 2:8)
Where are the Shepherds that will watch over their flocks by night? Leave alone the night, what about the day?
Notice heaven spoke to the Shepherds first
17 Now when they had seen Him, they made widely known the saying which was told them concerning this Child. 18 And all those who heard it marveled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. (Luke 2:17-18)
The shepherds made known widely what was revealed to them in secret
This is one of the primary job of every shepherd
The people marvelled but did not take the effort to know for themselves the truth (Luke 2:18)
Lu 2:19 But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart
And when eight days were completed for the circumcision of the Child,[e] His name was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before He was conceived in the womb. (Luke 2:21)
The name Jesus was given from heaven not from the internet. Naming a baby: Please pray and ask the Lord what He would call him or her. Adam named the animals and whatever he called them that was its name. You are Adam in Christ.
22 Now when the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male who opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”), 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “A pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.” Luke 2:22-24
Children are to be dedicated to the Lord
The ceremony of purification mentioned here is described in detail in Leviticus 12:2-8. This ceremony took place 40 days after the birth of a male child. The sacrifice is the kind prescribed for the poor (Lev.12:8)
The Ministry of the Spirit
The Holy Spirit was upon Simeon (Luke 2:25)
In the Old Testament the Holy Spirit was upon individuals but not in them.
The Holy Spirit reveals things to Simeon (Luke 2:26)
He came by the Spirit into the temple (Luke 2:27)
He prophesied by the Spirit of God (Luke 2:33-25)
Yet the Bible does not call Simeon a prophet but at the same time calls Anna a prophetess. (Luke 2:36)
This tells us that while Simeon operated in the prophetic, He was not in the office of a prophet.
but supposing Him to have been in the company, they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and acquaintances. (Luke 2:44)
Mary and Joseph assumed that Jesus was with them. Presumption is the lowest form of knowledge. Faith does not presume or assume. It is based on the Word of God. Sometimes we take the presence of Lord Jesus for granted assuming He is with us. We must never take the presence of Jesus lightly or for granted as Mary and Joseph did on this occasion. The good things about Mary and Joseph was when they did not find Jesus they sought Him earnestly till they found Him. (Luke 2:21-45)
Now so it was that after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. (Luke 2:46)
Notice, Jesus listened as well as asked questions. Luke 2:46
51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them, but His mother kept all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. (Luke 2:51-52)
There are some that say that Lord Jesus travelled to Kashmir. These are people that don’t read the bible inspired by the Holy Spirit.
