Let me begin with a question. How do you define ‘man’? Man is essentially a spirit being, possesses a soul and lives in an earth suit – the body. In spite of the erroneous teaching of “Jehovah’s Witnesses” and of other false sects that “no man has a soul,” the Bible clearly confirms what I just said. Let me give you a few scriptures to confirm this fact.
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1 Thessalonians 5:23)
For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow (body), and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)
Also notice carefully, the word of God says, “piercing even to the division of soul and spirit” If the spirit and the soul were one and the same, they could not be divided. The body relates to the physical world. The soul is one’s personality – the seat of emotions, and relates to people. The spirit relates to God.
Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. (2 Corinthians 4:16)
That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. (2 Corinthians 4:16 NLT)
This ‘inward man’ or the ‘spirit man’ is the real you. When the body dies this inward man does not die but continues to live. This is the reason Apostle Paul writes in Philippians 1:21 “For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
Now some people teach that after death a person can be born again into the world as a cow, a fly, a horse, a cat, etc. They call it ‘Reincarnation’. This is certainly not true, because there would be no gain in coming back on this earth as some lower form of animal life.
Today there are tons and tons of methods to beautify, restore and maintain the human body of man and that’s wonderful. In addition to that, many millions have been spent in developing the man’s intellectual capacities which are part of his soul. However, we know so little and have done so little about developing the spirit of man.
We need to train the spirit man. The process of training and building the spirit of man is not a onetime event but is a daily task – a daily process.
The Importance of developing our Spirit man
We are spirit beings
One reason people neglect to build up their spirits is that they don’t even realize they are spirit beings. As I told you earlier, man is essentially a spirit being, possesses a soul and lives in an earth suit – the body.
The spirit of a man sustains a man in difficult times
The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit? (Proverbs 18:14)
9 So Moses spoke thus to the children of Israel; but they did not heed Moses, because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. (Exodus 6:9)
Their spirits were so crushed that they did not even respond to the word of God. They had totally given up. This happens to people. This could have happened to you. The reason is their spirits were weak.
Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” (Nehemiah 8:10)
Where is the joy of the LORD resident? The joy of the LORD is resident in your spirit man. How do I know that? Because the bible tells me
The Battle between the inward and the outward man
16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. (Galatians 5:16-18)
Before a man receives Jesus Christ as his LORD and Saviour, the experience many call as the ‘born-again’ experience, the body rules over the soul and his fallen spirit.
However, after a man receives Jesus Christ as his LORD and Savior, the spirit of such a person possesses the very nature of God. Therefore it’s God’s will for our spirit man, our inward man, to dominate all of the rest of our being. In other words, we believers are to receive our orders from and are to be led by our spirit man
Before he was born again his body ruled over his Soul and his fallen spirit. After he is born again it’s imperative that he learn how to live out of his spirit man and to bring the soul and the body under the control of his new recreated spirit.
We are to no longer be led by our flesh, by our outward man. If we allow our flesh to control and dominate, it will cause us to miss the will of God every time. Why? Because the flesh – that’s Satan’s realm and deception is his speciality. Man’s flesh never wants to agree with the Word of God.
We don’t miss feeding our bodies three times a day, and we recharge our phones and laptops multiple times a day, but from time to time, we neglect the urgency and importance of recharging our spirit – developing our spirits.
The more you forget recharging your spirit man, the more it loses its strength to fight the flesh. When you feed the flesh, then your spirit man loses strength to pursue God passionately. Just as you have developed the discipline to recharge your gadgets, it is important that you develop a strict discipline to recharge your spirit!
Makes you an Over-comer
This depth in God will then cause a storm to feel like a breeze and the valley of the shadow of death like the shade in noon time as Jesus becomes the rock on which you stand.
Jesus in the storm was not ruffled. This was not the case with the disciples. Fear had gripped their spirits. I believe because Jesus had a strong spirit.
