However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. (John 16:13-14)

Notice how Lord Jesus referred to the Holy Spirit as “He” nine times in these two verses of Scripture and and not as it’. The reason is because the Holy Spirit is a Person.

It is very important that we realize that the Holy Spirit is a person. If you think of the Holy Spirit only as an essence, only as a breeze, only as a power, it is very difficult to develop a meaningful relationship with an essence.

If you think of the Holy Spirit as an impersonal force, an unintelligent power that spreads throughout the universe, you really cannot love Him or call upon Him in your time of need.

Every Born Again Christian needs to become acquainted with the Holy Spirit as a Person if they truly desire to see His manifestations in their lives.

the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. (John 14:17)

Notice, personal pronouns ‘He’ are again used in reference to the Holy Spirit in the above scripture

Now there are certain necessary characteristics of personality. Three things are necessary for personality:

1) Will
2) Intelligence and
3) Emotions.

And if the Holy Scriptures ascribe these characteristics to the Holy Spirit, then it is safe to assume that He is indeed a person.

Concerning the distribution of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, in 1 Corinthians 12, Apostle Paul said, “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. (1 Corinthians 12:11)

The Holy Spirit is spoken of as having a will-the first characteristic of personality.

1. The Holy Spirit Teaches

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. (John 14:26)

One of the main ministries of the Holy Spirit is ‘He teaches’. Not only does he teach but He teaches you ‘all’ things. He will not hide anything about Jesus but will teach us all that is to know. Only an intelligent being can teach.

Since the Holy Spirit is a person, He has emotions.

1.The Holy Spirit has Emotions

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. (Ephesians 4:30)

The word “grieve” generally means to make someone sorrowful or to cause them sadness, grief or offense. That the Holy Spirit can be grieved points out in greater degree the reality that the Holy Spirit is a person and not just a power.

Now from the above we can conclude that the Holy Spirit is indeed a person, possessing all of the characteristics of personality. As a person, He can be known, you can develop a relationship with Him and you can come into an intimate fellowship with Him.

Lord Jesus had been with his disciples for 3 ½ years and now He was telling them, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now” (John 13:36) How sad they must have been.

With Jesus around, they had nothing to fear or worry about. He was indeed ‘Master’ in every situation they faced – be it paying the tax money, answering the crooked pharisees or coming out of a life threatening storm.

They must have surely wondered, “What will we ever do without Jesus?” At that moment Jesus said, “I will not leave you orphans. 16 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Comforter (Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby), that He may remain with you forever (John 14:18, 16 Amplified)

The word ‘another comforter’ in the greek language is Alos paráklētos meaning another of the same kind. In essence, Lord Jesus was saying, “Just as I took care of you in every situation and made sure you were always the head and not the tail, just as I comforted you at all times, so also the Holy Spirit will be in you and with you to take care of every situation.”

This is why it is so very important that each of us come to know the person of the Holy Spirit. To know Him in His fullness, in order that we might experience the comfort, that help, the strength that we all need, especially in these perilous end times in which we are living.
