Thus the heavens and the earth, and all the host of them, were finished. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done. Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. (Genesis 2:1-3)
Why did God rest? Was He tired? Does an all-powerful God need rest?
God did not rest because He was tired or weary
The Bible clearly states that God Almighty does not need rest
Have you not known?
Have you not heard?
The everlasting God, the Lord,
The Creator of the ends of the earth,
Neither faints nor is weary.
His understanding is unsearchable. (Isaiah 40:28)
God rested…
1.To show His work of creating work was done
2.To give a pattern to man regarding the structure of time (a seven day week), and
3.To give an example of the blessing of rest to man on the seventh day.
The following verses make it clear that Christians are not under obligation to observe the Sabbath today because Jesus fulfilled the purpose and plan of the Sabbath for us and in us
So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a [a]festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. (Colossians 2:16-17)
But now after you have known God, or rather are known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which you desire again to be in bondage? You observe days and months and seasons and years. I am afraid for you, lest I have labored for you in vain. (Galatians 4:9-11)
Though we are free from the legal obligation of the Sabbath, we dare not ignore the importance of a day of rest. God has built us so we need one.
And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (Genesis 2:7)
Both secular science and the Scriptures state that man was formed from dust.
The Hebrew word for dust in Genesis 2:7 is aphar (Strong’s): clay, earth, mud, ashes, earth, ground, mortar, powder, rubbish.
It is associated with lowliness and humility
This one passage contains three significant facts about man’s creation.
The first is that God and God alone created man. Man did not evolve from other creatures. Impersonal forces did not form man.
Second, God breathed His own breath of life into man. Adam’s body had just been formed by God from the dust of the earth—a lifeless human body lying on the ground. Then God leaned over and “breathed” His own “breath of life” into the man’s nostrils
Third, Genesis 2:7 tells us that man became a living soul (KJV). The word soul in Hebrew is nephesh, meaning “an animated, breathing, conscious, and living being.” Man did not become a living soul until God breathed life into him. As a physical, animate, rational, and spiritual being, man is unique among all living things upon the earth. Only man is a living being made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27).
The Hebrew word for spirit is ruach, which means “wind, breath, air, spirit.”
The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Genesis 2:8-9)
The book of Proverbs makes mention of the Tree of Life
Proverbs 3:18
Proverbs 11:30
Proverbs 13:12
Proverbs 15:4
The Tree of life is also mentioned in the following scriptures
Ezekiel 47:12
Revelation 2:7
Revelation 22:2
Revelation 22:14
Now a river went out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it parted and became four riverheads. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one which skirts the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good. Bdellium and the onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one which goes around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Hiddekel; it is the one which goes toward the east of Assyria. The fourth river is the Euphrates. (Genesis 2:10-14)
The Pishon is the first of four rivers in Eden.
The others are Gihon, Hiddekel and Euphrates — Genesis 2:11-14). The Haddakel and Euphrates are known today as the Tigris and Euphrates, but the Pishon and Gihon seem to have no alter-ego's in observable reality.
Of the river Pishon it is said that it "flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold" (Genesis 2:11).
Where Was the Garden of Eden Located?
Most Bible scholars state that the site of the Garden of Eden was in the Middle East, situated somewhere near where the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers are today. This is based on the description given in Genesis 2:8–14
Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. (Genesis 2:15)
Notice, that God’s command for Adam to tend and care for the garden was given before sin entered the picture. In other words, Adam’s job came straight from God, and it was a part of His perfect creation. Adam was not lazing around, he was on a God given job. Every person must work
Work is not, a part of the curse that came about from mankind’s sin. God means for us to find purpose and satisfaction in work, and He gives us the desire to succeed and be productive in that work.
Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, (Colossians 3:23)
Sometimes, Christians are not very good witnesses at their workplaces. Frequent holidays for Christian conferences, and too many late comings mar their image. It’s a classic case of the talk not matching the walk.
So, work today like your job matters to God—because in truth, it does!
And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” (Genesis 2:18)
God saw that though Adam was surrounded by so many wonderful animals and birds, though he was in a very good environment – he was lonely. The truth is, you can be in a crowd and still feel lonely. It was the loneliness of Adam that caught God’s attention and it was the first thing that God called - not good.
God never intended for man to be alone, either in the marital or social sense.
Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. (Genesis 2:19-20)
God did not name the animals and the birds, Adam named them
And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man. (Genesis 2:21-22)
We have often heard the modern proverb, “Behind every successful man there is a woman” I would not like to agree with the proverb because the woman was not taken from the spinal cord she was taken from the side of man. So I would rather say, beside every successful man there is a woman.
Adam’s bride - Eve was formed out of his side. Even the bride of Christ, the Church was formed out of his side after He was pierced.
John 19:34 says, “But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came out blood and water.” John 19:37 tells us, “And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.”
Two substances came out of the Lord's pierced side:
1. Blood and
2. Water.
Blood is for redemption, to deal with our sins (Hebrews 9:22) for the purchasing of the church (Acts 20:28). Water is for imparting life, to deal with death for the producing of the church (Ephesians. 5:29-30).
In both cases, this was the "bride price". Adam gave a rib. Christ gave his life.
1 Corinthians 6:20 says, “For you were bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
And Adam said:
“This is now bone of my bones
And flesh of my flesh;
She shall be called Woman,
Because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:23)
Was this the first word of knowledge in the bible? The reason I say this is because Adam did not really know what happened to him.
