When Aaron burnt incense the entire Holy place would be filled with the fragrance. This fragrance would extend past the Holy place, into the tabernacle and past the gates of the tabernacle. According to Jewish tradition, the sweet aroma of the incense could be detected approximately a quarter of a mile away from the temple, during the days of Jesus.

“Once a year Aaron must purify the altar by smearing its horns with blood from the offering made to purify the people from their sin. This will be a regular, annual event from generation to generation, for this is the Lord’s most holy altar.” (Exodus 30:10)
The altar of incense was the altar of prayer. Every year it had to be purified; sanctified.
This was done on the Day of Atonement.
You need to sanctify your prayer altar regularly.
