And Elijah the Tishbite, of the inhabitants of Gilead, said to Ahab (1 Kings 17:1)
The name Elijah comes from the Hebrew phrase "Yahweh is my God."
As the LORD God of Israel lives, before whom I stand: (1 Kings 17:1)
This declaration made by Elijah reveals the origin of his enduring inner strength and power. It is stated rather explicitly that Elijah was a man who had a nature like ours (James 5:17). However, he demonstrated greater strength than the majority of us in our day-to-day walk with God. We could do well to learn from him.
2 Then the word of the Lord came to him, saying, 3 “Get away from here and turn eastward, and hide by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 4 And it will be that you shall drink from the brook, and I have commanded the ravens to feed you there.”
5 So he went and did according to the word of the Lord, for he went and stayed by the Brook Cherith, which flows into the Jordan. 6 The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning, and bread and meat in the evening; and he drank from the brook. (1 Kings 17:2-6)
Ravens, by their very nature, are not givers but rather takers of everything they can get their beaks on. In order for his prophet to be fed, God altered the natural behaviour of the ravens. God can do the same for you and your loved ones. He may use someone you cannot imagine to bless you.
Also, because the raven was considered an unclean animal in accordance with the law of Moses, Elijah had to let go of his customary conceptions of what constituted clean and unclean behaviour in order to avoid starvation.
I believe that in this time of acute famine, Elijah was fed directly from the table of Ahab during the time of famine. How true is God’s word, “The wealth of the wicked is stored up for the righteous.” (Proverbs 13:22)
Then the woman said to Elijah, “Now by this, I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the Lord in your mouth is the truth.” (1 Kings 17:24)
Miracles will always prove your authenticity before the people of the world.
