Moreover, brethren, I do not want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud, all passed through the sea, 2 all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, (1 Corinthians 10:1-2)
All were under the Cloud
All passed through the sea
All baptized into Moses (in the cloud and in the sea)
Baptism in the sea represents water Baptism and Baptism in the Cloud represents the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. Just as today we have two baptisms - water baptism and baptism of the Holy Spirit.
all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ. (1 Corinthians 10:3-4)
All ate the same spiritual food
All drank the same spiritual drink
This food did not come from the ground, it came from heaven hence it is called spiritual food. Just as we need physical food for our bodies, we need spiritual food for our spiritual bodies. The children of Israel ate spiritual food and spiritual drink to overcome the harsh wilderness. Likewise, If we are to overcome the harsh world, then we certainly need to eat spiritual food and spiritual drink.
But with most of them, God was not well pleased, for their bodies were scattered in the wilderness. (1 Corinthians 10:5)
The trouble was how the people responded to what was given to them
1.Your attitude to the things of God determine what you will receive
2.Your attitude to the things of God will determine how far you will go in God. Someone said, your attitude determines your altitude.
Now these things became our examples (1 Corinthians 10:6 NKJV)
Now these things became as a warning to us (1 Corinthians 10:6 NLT)
Now all these things happened to them as examples, and they were written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the ages have come. (1 Corinthians 10:11)
If it could happen to them, then we must take care, for it could happen to us also. Some casual drivers look at the warning signs on the Ghats and think this is for others, not me. Their attitude is so casual that they ended up as a casualty.
They were written for our admonition - This is the purpose of all scripture.
A wise person learns from his mistakes
A wiser one learns from others' mistakes
You don't have so much time to make all the mistakes and learn from them
...to the intent that we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted. 7 And do not become idolaters as were some of them. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.” 8 Nor let us commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand fell; 9 nor let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed by serpents; 10 nor complain, as some of them also complained, and were destroyed by the destroyer. (1 Corinthians 10:6-10)
The Children of Israel had many blessings and spiritual experiences but they never entered into what God really had for them.
Have you seen people who receive lots of visions, dreams, revelations and still, they are not going anywhere. What good is an experience if you don't learn anything from it?
Why did they fall in the wilderness?
1. They lusted (v.6)....1 John 2:16 lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh
2. Idolatry (v.7)....worshiping in a manner other than prescribed in the word of God
3. Sexual Immorality (v.8)
4. Tempted Christ (v.9)....praying for things that are contrary to the word of God…..
5. Complained and Grumbled (v.10)
