Our Identity in Christ
According to a recent research, women look into the mirror around 38 times and more every day. Men too are not much behind and manage as much as 18 times or more per day.
However, studies show that women are much more critical of their appearance than men. While this research may not hold good in some cases but generally speaking, many of us do look into a mirror often throughout the day. This is to make sure that we are looking just right for the occasion. Over the years, we have learned to trust what the mirror tells us. If something is not right, we immediately rush to fix it.
In this world of selfies and filters, we have sadly arrived at a warped definition of what is true beauty. True beauty is not what the latest glam mags tell us. Such beauty is only skin deep and does not benefit anyone. We need to renew our minds and look at what the Bible calls true beauty.
"Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewellery, or the clothing you wear— Let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious" (1 Peter 3:4)
I believe the above scripture is not only applicable to women but also men. Don’t categorise people merely on their looks. Also, don’t feel rejected because you don’t have the kind of looks that the magazines say you must have. Work on your communication, gentleness, kindness, faithfulness. These qualities are much more precious than mere skin beauty.
James 1:23 says God’s word is a mirror. Everyday take a look into God’s mirror and see what His word has to say about you.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “You are God’s masterpiece created anew in Christ Jesus, so that you can do the good things He planned for you long ago.”
Psalm 139:13-14 “You alone created my inner being. You knitted me together inside my mother. I will give thanks to you because I have been so amazingly and miraculously made. Your works are miraculous, and my soul is fully aware of this.”
You need to receive such scriptures by faith and act on them. This will renew the image that you have of yourself on the inside.
Each one of us have been given talents and abilities that are unique, why not work on them. You will begin to shine in this dark world. So don’t get into a shell. Go out and shine for Jesus.
Now, I understand that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit and we should certainly take care of our bodies through healthy eating and exercise. Also, we need to dress decently well etc. but that is not what defines our worth and beauty. You are what God says you are. God’s mirror does not lie.
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, help me to see myself the way you see me.
Holy Spirit of God, open my eyes to see my identity and worth in you through Your Word. In Jesus name, Amen
Holy Spirit of God, open my eyes to see my identity and worth in you through Your Word. In Jesus name, Amen
