David makes a powerful statement in Psalm 27. He does not ask first for victory, protection, or wealth. He asks for closeness and understanding.
“One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.” (Psalm 27:4 NKJV)
David knew that God knows everything. But what amazed him was this truth: God is willing to share His wisdom with those who seek Him. God is not hiding His will. He invites us to ask.
When Emotions Are High
David learned this lesson in a very painful way. One day, he and his men returned to their town, Ziklag, only to find everything destroyed.
“David and his men came to Ziklag on the third day, and behold, the Amalekites had invaded the South and Ziklag, attacked Ziklag and burned it with fire, and had taken captive the women and those who were there, from small to great; they did not kill anyone, but carried them away and went their way.” (1 Samuel 30:1–3 NKJV)
Everything was gone—wives, children, possessions. Emotions were running wild. Fear, anger, grief, and shock filled the camp.
“Now David was greatly distressed, for the people spoke of stoning him… But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.” (1 Samuel 30:6 NKJV)
This is where many people fail. When emotions run high, people act fast—and regret later. But David did something different. Instead of reacting emotionally, David paused and asked God.
“So David inquired of the Lord, saying, ‘Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?’ And He answered him, ‘Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.'' (1 Samuel 30:8 NKJV)
David did not assume. He did not rush. He inquired. And because he did, he received clear direction and complete victory. To inquire of the Lord means to ask God for His perspective before making a decision.
This Principle Today
You are about to invest your life savings into a business opportunity. Everything sounds good. The sales talk is impressive. Before you sign anything—inquire of the Lord. God sees what you cannot see.
You see someone’s photos on social media and fall in love instantly. Everything looks perfect. But when you take time to inquire of the Lord, He reveals the truth behind the image. Suddenly, what looked exciting no longer feels right.
Inquiring of the Lord saves us from years of regret.
God Promises to Guide
God does not leave His children confused.
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle.” (Psalm 32:8–9 NKJV)
God wants willing obedience, not forced correction. He wants us to ask, listen, and follow.
To inquire of the Lord is to seek His will—not to push our own plans and ask Him to bless them.
Those who inquire walk in clarity.
Those who rush walk in confusion.
Inquiring of the Lord is often the difference between failure and victory.
