“And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, ‘Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?’ Elisha said, ‘Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.’” (2 Kings 2:9)
There comes a moment in every believer’s journey when they must ask themselves: Do I truly desire more of God? Not just casually but deeply, intensely, and wholeheartedly.
Elisha did not ask for wealth, position, or recognition. He asked for something far greater a double portion of the spirit that was upon Elijah. This was not a casual request; it was the cry of a hungry heart.
1. Hunger Precedes Power
The first requirement to move in greater power and authority in God is hunger.
This kind of hunger cannot be manufactured. It is birthed by God within a seeking heart. Elisha had already witnessed miracles while serving Elijah, yet he refused to be satisfied with what he had seen. He desired more.
When he made his request, Elijah replied, “You have asked a difficult thing.” Not because it was impossible but because greater anointing comes with greater responsibility, greater pressure, and often greater trials.
Many desire the power, but few are willing to carry the weight that comes with it.
2. Humility Before Honour
Before Elisha was known as a prophet, he was known as “the servant of Elijah.”
His identity was hidden in service. His name was not in the spotlight. Yet this was his preparation.
This has been God’s pattern throughout Scripture:
- Joseph served Pharaoh before he ruled Egypt.
- David served Saul before he became king.
Humility is not weakness it is the training ground for honour. God often hides His chosen vessels in seasons of service before revealing them in seasons of authority.
3. Total Commitment to the Call
Elisha’s response to his calling was radical.
“When Elisha was called… he left his oxen, slaughtered them, and gave them to the people, and he arose and followed Elijah.” (1 Kings 19:19–21)
This was not a part-time decision. It was total surrender.
By destroying his farming equipment, Elisha removed every possibility of returning to his old life. He burned the bridges behind him. There was no backup plan only forward movement in God’s purpose.
This is the spirit of a true pioneer: stepping out without knowing all the details, yet fully trusting the One who called.
The Starting Point of Greater Things
Do you desire to move in a greater dimension of God’s anointing?
“You will seek Me and find Me, when you seek Me with all your heart… I will be found by you.” (Jeremiah 29:13)
It begins here with hunger.
Not surface-level desire, but a deep, consuming thirst for God. When that hunger is present, God responds. He reveals Himself. He entrusts more.
Begin today.
Stir up a hunger in your heart for more of God.
Embrace humility.
Commit fully to His call.
And as you do, you will step into greater dimensions of His power and presence.
The journey to a “double portion” always begins with a hungry heart.
