You Were Born For a Purpose

“Indeed, we all make many mistakes…” these words from James the Apostle reveal a profound truth. If a person can control their tongue, they can control their entire life. James uses vivid imagery: a bit in a horse’s mouth and a rudder on a ship. Both are small, yet they determine direction.

In the same way, your tongue though small has the power to shape your destiny.

Understanding the Ship Analogy

James compares our lives to a ship navigating through turbulent waters. This illustration is deeply insightful:

The ship – Your life
The pilot – Your inner man (spirit)
The strong winds – Circumstances and events of life
The rudder – Your tongue
The ocean – Life itself

No matter how strong the winds may be, the direction of the ship is ultimately determined by the rudder. Likewise, your words have the power to direct your life, even in the midst of chaos.

Three Foundational Truths

1. You Are Full of God-Given Potential

The Lord Jesus has invested greatly in you. As Ephesians 4:8 reminds us, He has given gifts to men. You are not empty you are loaded with divine potential.

You are like a merchant ship, filled with valuable cargo, sent on a mission. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you must discover, refine, and use these gifts for God’s glory and for the benefit of others.

Never underestimate what God has placed within you.

2. Strange Forces Will Try to Influence Your Life

Being a Christian does not exempt you from storms. Any teaching that suggests a trouble-free life is misleading. In fact, some storms come precisely because you are walking in obedience.

Consider the disciples with Jesus in the boat (Mark 4:35). The journey began at the command of the Lord: “Let us cross over to the other side.” Yet, they encountered a violent storm.

This raises a real question: If I obeyed God, why am I facing this?

Sometimes, the storms you face in obedience are more intense than ordinary storms. These “strange forces” may not always have a logical explanation, but they are real.

The key is this: Do not give up in the storm.

Hold on to Jesus more tightly than ever before.

Interestingly, the storm did not wake Jesus but the cry of the disciples did. There is power in calling upon Him. When the winds rage, let your voice rise in prayer.

3. You Can Steer Your Life in the Right Direction

Your life does not drift into destiny it is directed there. God has made you the pilot of your own ship.

In the midst of strong and contrary winds, the pilot must remain focused on the destination. Likewise, you must not allow circumstances to dictate your direction. Instead, use your “rudder” your words to align with God’s purpose.

Three Keys to Steering Your Ship

Vision

You must know where you are going. Without vision, the ship will wander aimlessly.

Hope

Hope keeps you steady in the storm. It anchors your soul when everything around you is unstable.

Confession

Your words matter. Speak in alignment with God’s promises, not your problems. Your confession directs your course.

No matter how fierce the winds may be, your life is not at the mercy of circumstances. God has given you the ability to steer it.

Guard your tongue. Align your words with His Word. And even in the midst of life’s fiercest storms, you will reach your God-ordained destination.
