“For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” — John 1:17
Across every generation and culture, mankind has searched for God. Whether in great civilisations or remote jungles, people instinctively worship something greater than themselves. This longing is no accident. God has placed eternity in the human heart, creating within every person a desire to know their Creator.
The tragedy is that many spend their lives searching without ever truly finding Him.
The Law Revealed Our Need
Throughout history, religion has sought to bridge the gap between God and man through laws, rituals, and good works. Yet the harder people strive, the more they become aware of their failures. Instead of bringing them closer to God, their efforts often leave them burdened by guilt and uncertainty.
This was also the experience of Israel under the Old Covenant. God gave His law through Moses, and while the law perfectly reflected His holiness, it also exposed man's inability to live up to His perfect standard. As Paul explains, the law became a schoolmaster, revealing our need for a Saviour rather than our ability to save ourselves (Galatians 3:24–25).
Even the structure of the tabernacle communicated this truth. Every curtain, sacrifice, and restriction reminded the worshipper that God's presence was real, yet access remained limited because of sin.
Jesus Changed Everything
John declares, "The law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."
Jesus did not come merely to introduce another set of teachings. He came to reveal the Father.
For the first time, people could see the character of God through a Person. In Jesus, truth was no longer written only on tablets of stone; it walked among men. Grace became visible. Mercy became personal. Holiness was no longer distant but reached out to restore broken lives.
Jesus fulfilled every requirement of the law and accomplished what no human being ever could. Through His death and resurrection, He opened the way for every person to come confidently into God's presence.
Faith Gives Us Access
Before Christ came, people were kept under the law until faith should be revealed (Galatians 3:23). Faith is not merely believing that God exists; it is placing our complete trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ.
Through faith we receive what grace freely provides. We no longer approach God trying to earn His acceptance. We come because Christ has already made us acceptable before the Father.
Grace is not simply God's favour; it is His invitation into a relationship with Him.
More Than His Acts—Knowing His Ways
Psalm 103:7 says that God made His ways known to Moses but His acts to the children of Israel. Many people know what God can do, yet few truly know His heart.
That is what grace accomplishes.
The law revealed God's standard, but grace reveals God's character. It invites us into fellowship, not merely obedience; into sonship, not merely service.
Through faith we access His power, and through grace we come to know His heart and walk in His ways. That is the privilege every believer has through Jesus Christ.
