Who is Leading You?

"God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind. Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?"—Numbers 23:19

"Just listen to your heart."

"If it feels good, just do it."

These messages surround us every day. We hear them in children's cartoons, popular songs, movies, advertisements, and social media. Modern culture constantly tells us that our feelings should become the compass for our lives and that the heart should always have the final say.

While that may sound attractive, it is one of the most dangerous philosophies a believer can embrace.

The Heart Is Not a Reliable Guide

The Bible gives us a very different perspective.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9)

Our emotions are real, but they are not always right. Feelings can change from one moment to the next. One day we feel full of faith, and the next day we feel discouraged. One moment we feel like forgiving; the next we feel like holding on to bitterness.

If we build our lives on feelings, we will constantly be changing direction. But if we build our lives on God's unchanging Word, we will remain steadfast regardless of our circumstances.

Feelings Make Poor Masters

When feelings become our master, they begin to influence every decision we make. Instead of asking, "What does God say?" we begin asking, "How do I feel?"

That approach often leads to unwise, ungodly, and self-centred decisions. It cultivates a lifestyle where personal comfort becomes more important than obedience.

Jesus never called us to follow our feelings. He called us to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Luke 9:23). True discipleship is built on surrender, not on emotion.James paints a vivid picture of a person who is ruled by doubt and fluctuating emotions:

"But let him ask in faith, without doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind... he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:6–8)

A life controlled by emotions will always resemble the waves of the sea constantly moving, constantly shifting, and never settled.

God desires something far better for His children. He wants us to be rooted, grounded, and established in Him.

Choose Wisdom Over Feelings

So what is the answer?

Scripture gives it to us plainly:

"Those who trust in themselves are fools, but those who walk in wisdom are kept safe." (Proverbs 28:26)

God's wisdom is found in His Word. His Word does not change with culture, circumstances, or emotions because God Himself does not change. He is faithful to every promise He has spoken.

From today onwards, make a deliberate decision not to be led by your feelings but by the Word of God. Let Scripture become the final authority over your thoughts, your choices, and your actions.

As you walk in God's wisdom instead of your emotions, you will experience greater stability, deeper peace, and lasting spiritual growth. Your life will be blessed, and before long, you will become a blessing to many others.
