"He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed." —Proverbs 13:20
One of the greatest influences on your life is not your circumstances it is the people you choose to walk with.
Whether we realise it or not, we gradually become like those with whom we spend the most time. Their thinking shapes our thinking. Their attitudes influence our attitudes. Their values slowly become our values.
That is why Scripture urges us to choose our companions wisely.
The Company You Keep Matters
If you continually surround yourself with angry, resentful, negative people, you will eventually begin to reflect those same attitudes. Attitudes are contagious.
Likewise, if you spend time with people who love God, honour His Word, and pursue wisdom, their influence will strengthen your faith and sharpen your character.
The people around you are either pulling you closer to God's purpose or drawing you away from it.
Choose your company carefully.
Who Is a Fool?
When Solomon speaks about a fool, he is not referring to someone who lacks intelligence or education.
In the book of Proverbs, a fool is someone who rejects God's wisdom and insists on living according to their own understanding. They believe they know what is best for their lives, even when God's Word says otherwise.
Their pursuit of fulfilment leads them to the wrong places because they have ignored the One who alone can satisfy the human heart.
The tragedy of walking with fools is that their way of thinking slowly becomes your own.
Walk with the Wise
So how do we walk with wise people?
One of the greatest privileges we have today is access to the wisdom of godly men and women through books. Every good book allows you to sit at the feet of someone who has already travelled the road you are walking. You learn from their victories, their failures, and the lessons they paid a price to discover.
Someone wisely said, "Leaders are readers."
Another way to walk with the wise is to listen to them. Attend meetings where God's Word is faithfully preached. Listen to sermons, podcasts, and teachings that strengthen your faith and deepen your understanding of Scripture.
I remember receiving a testimony from a pastor in Kolhapur, who also shared it during one of our W3 Conferences. He said, "Pastor, I constantly listened to your sermons and watched your testimony videos on YouTube. As I kept hearing God's Word, my faith grew stronger, and today the Lord has blessed our church to grow to more than 300 people."
That is the power of consistently placing yourself under godly influence.
Walk with Jesus Every Day
Above all, never forget to walk with the wisest Person who has ever lived the Lord Jesus Christ.
Spend time with Him every day through His Word and through prayer. Allow Him to shape your thoughts, correct your heart, and direct your steps.
The early disciples had no impressive qualifications in the eyes of the religious leaders. Yet there was something unmistakable about them.
"They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus." (Acts 4:13 NLT)
That is the greatest compliment a believer can receive.
As you walk daily with Jesus, His wisdom will become your wisdom, His character will become your character, and His life will be reflected through yours.
Walk with the wise, and above all, walk with Christ. It will transform your life, and through your life, God will transform the lives of many others.
