Oh Lord, Let Your Will Be Done
“May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.” Matthew 6:10 (NLT)
When we pray for God's will to be done, we are indirectly asking Him to establish His kingdom and carry out His perfect plans for our lives.
Our perspective changes when we pray for God's will to be done. His will automatically meets our needs, so we don't need to strive for our own will to be done. Our "self", egos, and vainglory are crucified when we pray for God's will to be done.
The will of God needs to be prayed for in the earthly realm before He can move into action. If our prayer does not invite God, He will not step in.
Why do we need to know the will of God?
1. If you don’t know the will of God, it would be difficult to pray according to the will of God
In 2 Kings 4:33-35, Prophet Elisha and the woman knew that it was not the will of God for the boy to die prematurely, so, Prophet Elisha prayed fervently till the boy was restored to life. When you are ignorant of the will of God, you will accept anything that life offers.
2. If you don’t know the will of God, you may fail when you are tempted to sin
In Matthew 4:1-11, Jesus overcame the temptations of the devil because He perfectly understood the will of God. At some point, the devil misrepresented the word of God, but Jesus countered him. If you don’t know the will of God, the devil will play games with your life and trap you.
3. Our safety, blessing, and wealth are inside the will of God
If we are ignorant of the will of God, the devil can take advantage of us.
“Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers. (3 John 2) Some people think that sickness is part of the will of God for their life. Some feel maybe God wants them to live a humble life through poverty. They have been deceived into accepting the afflictions of the devil. It is time to resist anything that is below the will of God for your life.
4. We can only live in obedience to the will of God when we know it
If we are ignorant of the will of God, we would automatically do things that are against His will.
Then I said, ‘Behold, I have come— In the volume of the book it is written of Me— To do Your will, O God.’ ” (Hebrews 10:7)
5. Whenever we don’t walk in agreement with the will of God, the devil swings into action to attack us
nor give place to the devil. (Ephesians 4:27)
6. The devil accuses us when we are living outside the will of God
Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the Angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to oppose him. (Zechariah 3:1)
7. God cannot do anything outside His will
You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures. (James 4:3). We cannot receive answers when our prayers are outside the will of God.
8. We cannot fulfil destiny outside the will of God
4 Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. 5 “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. 7 If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you. (John 15:4-7)
2 Vital keys to knowing God’s will and plan for your life
You must cultivate your relationship with God. You must seek to know Him and not just seek to know about Him.
You will cultivate that relationship best by spending time in His Word, taking time for prayer, and taking every opportunity you can to be involved in church and get under a J-12 leader etc. When you seek these disciplines in your life, God will begin the first steps to revealing His plan to you.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6)
- Obey what you already know to be God’s Will
Many people seem to want to know what God’s plan is for their lives, but they overlook the fact that 98 percent of His will is already revealed carefully through His Word. God is very clear about many, many aspects of His will. For instance, it is clearly His plan that we abstain from sexual immorality.
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3).
If we do not obey the things that God has shown us clearly to be His will, why would we think He would reveal any further information regarding His plan for our lives?
