Time management experts often use the concept of 'Big Rocks in a Jar' to help individuals prioritize their life. The idea is demonstrated by a philosophy teacher who uses a glass jar to teach his class. He begins by filling the jar with large rocks and asks the class if the jar is full. Although they agree, the teacher explains that it's not. He then adds pebbles to the jar and shakes it, allowing them to fill in the spaces between the big rocks, and asks again if it's full. The class agrees that it's now full, but the teacher says it's not. Next, he adds sand to the jar, filling it up to the brim, and again asks if it's full. Again, the students are hesitant to respond. Finally, the teacher pours water into the jar, completely filling it, and asks if it's now full.
The illustration of the glass jar teaches a valuable lesson about prioritizing in life. By filling the jar with small items first, there won't be enough space left for the big rocks to fit in. Therefore, the story highlights the importance of prioritising the big, essential things in life. While the small things have their place, filling our lives with them excessively can leave no room for the crucial things we need to achieve. Hence, it's crucial to balance the small things and prioritize the big things in life to make the most of our time and achieve our goals.
It's essential to prioritize and determine what's important in life. The big rocks, the things that we must have or must do, should be given priority from the beginning. Wasting our time on insignificant matters won't help us achieve our goals. This principle applies to our spiritual lives as well. We have some significant priorities to fulfil, such as prayer, reading God's Word, worship, attending church, and being a witness for Christ.
However, filling our lives with trivial matters can leave no room for essential spiritual activities. Therefore, it's important to strike a balance and not let the good things distract us from the best things in life. By prioritizing the important aspects of life, we can make the most of our time and fulfill our purpose.
In 2 Timothy 4:13, Paul requests Pastor Timothy to visit him while he is in prison. Given his limitations, Paul had to narrow down his request to three essential items. He asks for his cloak, which he left with Carpus in Troas, as well as his books, particularly the parchments. Although we don't know the specific content of those books and parchments, we know that they were crucial to Paul at that moment in his life. These three items were the big rocks in his jar during his imprisonment.
As we reflect on Paul's priorities, we must consider our big rocks. What are the crucial things in our lives that we need to prioritize? It could be our family, health, career, education, spirituality, or any other area of life that holds significant importance. By identifying our big rocks and placing them in our jar first, we can make the most of our time and achieve our goals. It's vital to determine our priorities and focus on what's essential to live a fulfilling life.
