As Christians, we all desire to experience the blessings that God has promised us. However, the truth is that there are often strongholds that need to be dealt with in order to fully enjoy those blessings. Some new Christians may become disillusioned when they continue to face persecution, spiritual battles, and problems in their lives.
They are like the “seed on the rocky soil representing those who hear the message and immediately receive it with joy. But since they don’t have deep roots, they don’t last long. They fall away as soon as they have problems or are persecuted for believing God’s word.” (Mark 4: 16-17 NLT) What they dont realise is that there are often battles that precede blessings.
In Joshua 1:3, God promised the Israelites that He would give them every place where they set their foot. However, this promise was conditional on their obedience and willingness to drive out the enemy nations that were inhabiting the land. In Numbers 33:55, God warned the Israelites that if they did not drive out these nations, those whom they let remain would become irritants and thorns in their sides.
Likewise, in our own lives, there are often spiritual strongholds that must be dealt with if we are to fully experience the blessings that God has promised us. These strongholds can take many different forms, such as addictions, negative thought patterns, fear, or even unhealthy relationships. Whatever the stronghold may be, it is important that we recognise it and take steps to overcome it.
2 Corinthians 10:4 tells us that the weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. Instead, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. Our greatest weapon in the battle against strongholds is prayer and the Word of God. When we spend time in prayer and in reading the Word of God, we are able to identify and address the strongholds in our lives.
As Christians, we must recognise that we have an adversary who seeks to prevent God's promises from coming to fruition in our lives. During times of waiting for the fulfilment of these promises, we must not lose heart. Instead, we should engage in spiritual battle by wielding the truth of God's Word against the enemy's tactics. We can trust that every battle we face will ultimately lead to a blessing. Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy saying: “Timothy, my son, I am giving you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies previously made about you, so that by them you may strongly engage in battle” (1 Timothy 1:18)
It is important to remember that spiritual battles are not necessarily a sign of weakness or lack of faith. In fact, they can be a sign that we are growing and maturing in our faith. As we overcome the strongholds in our lives, we become stronger and more equipped to handle the challenges that may come our way.
In James 1:2-4, we are encouraged to consider it pure joy whenever we face trials of many kinds because the testing of our faith produces perseverance. And perseverance, when it is fully developed, will result in our being complete and lacking nothing. Through the trials and battles we face, we can grow and become more like Christ.
So, let us not become discouraged when we face spiritual battles and strongholds in our lives. Instead, let us trust in the Lord and lean on His strength to overcome them. As we do so, we will be able to fully experience the blessings that God has promised us in the Promised Land.
"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." (Joshua 1:9)
Prayer
Father, help us to stand firm in Your truth as we engage in spiritual battle against the enemy's tactics. Strengthen us with Your power and lead us to the blessings You have promised. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
