Following a prophetic service, some young people walked up to me and asked me, “How do we hear the voice of God clearly for ourselves?” They had driven for miles just to be in that service, and I could see that this was not just a casual question. They were really hungry for God.
It is a common misconception that God communicates exclusively with a select few. That’s not true. God speaks to everyone. This proves the fact that He is God of all and over all. He spoke to the Pharaoh. He spoke to the whale that had swallowed Jonah. God is always speaking. If God is speaking to everyone, then why are we not able to hear the voice of God?
Whales, as majestic and intelligent marine mammals, are known for their strong social bonds and intricate communication systems. They travel in closely-knit groups called "pods," which can range from just a few individuals to several dozen members. These pods function as supportive communities, where they work together to hunt, protect one another, and raise their young.
Whales utilize a diverse array of vocalizations to communicate and socialize within their pods. Clicks, whistles, and pulsed calls are the three primary types of sounds they produce. To us they are just sounds but to another whale in the group hearing the same thing, it is speaking; they are communicating to one another.
The main reason you and I miss the communication or lack the understanding of what is being communicated is because we are not tuned to their realm. You and I are outside their realm and hence to us they are only unintelligible sounds and to them it is communication.
Even when Lord Jesus Christ walked the earth, speaking the common language familiar to those around Him, many still struggled to understand His message and draw meaning. He spoke Aramaic, the language taught in the schools of the day, yet when He shared His teachings, many were left confused. Why did this happen? Jesus' words were infused with spiritual meaning, and it required an openness to the spiritual realm to truly grasp His message.
In John 8:43, Jesus asked, "Why do you not understand what I say? It is because you cannot bear to hear my word." Those who were not spiritually attuned could not fully understand His teachings. The apostle Paul further emphasized this in 1 Corinthians 2:14, stating, "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned."
Lord Jesus often spoke in parables to illustrate spiritual truths, as in Matthew 13:13: "This is why I speak to them in parables, because seeing they do not see, and hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand." His teachings required that one be tuned to the realm of the Spirit.
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)
The Lord Jesus said His words are spirit, you cannot hear them until you become sensitive to the spiritual, until then when he speaks to you it will be no different to the sound of a whale. It will be meaningless, even though God is speaking many are still groping in the dark clueless. As long you are outside that realm it will only be a sound.
Therefore the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” (John 12:29)
A sound is a vibration that travels through the air or another medium, while a voice carries a message and meaning. In this context, the sound of the divine voice represents the physical manifestation of God's power, while the voice itself carries a message and carries His very presence.
The fact that Jesus clearly heard a voice while others only heard a sound suggests that spiritual sensitivity plays a crucial role in discerning divine communication. Jesus, as the Son of God, had an intimate connection with the Father, allowing Him to perceive the voice and message clearly.
Spiritual sensitivity can be cultivated through a deepening relationship with God. As we grow in our faith and seek to know God more intimately, we become better equipped to discern His voice amidst the noise and distractions of the world.
Prayer
Father, open my spiritual ears and let them be tuned to Your voice. In Jesus’ name. Amen!!
