Fasting and Prayer
Repentance
“Now, therefore,” says the Lord, “Turn to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning.” (Joel 2:12 NKJV)
Turn to me with all your heart.
How does one turn to the Lord with all their heart?
1. Repentance - Repentance is to turn from the world to the word.
2. Fasting - That is to be accompanied by weeping and mourning
Therefore also now, says the Lord, turn and keep on coming to Me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored]. (Joel 2:12 Amplified)
Keep on coming to me….this has to be an ongoing process [until every hindrance is removed and the broken fellowship is restored].
So rend your heart, and not your garments (Joel 2:13)
One expression of mourning in Jewish culture was the tearing of the clothes. This practice still continues among the jews today.
More than an outward show of grief, true sorrow for sin and genuine repentance of the heart is more important. Prophet Joel relayed God’s command: “Rend your heart and not your garments” (Joel 2:13).
God is more impressed with the condition of the heart than external rituals.
Return to the LORD your God, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness; and He relents from doing harm (Joel 2:13)
Knowing the goodness and mercy of God is another motive for true repentance. We come to Him confident that He will heal and forgive, and that He may relent from the judgment He announced.
We don’t repent with the idea “God is so mean that if I don’t return to Him, He will destroy me.” Instead, the idea is “God is so gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness that He will spare me from what I deserve if turn back to Him.” Ultimately, it is His goodness that leads us to repentance (Romans 2:4).
In Luke 5:1-11, when Lord Jesus came into Peter’s boat and directed him to cast his nets. It resulted in Peter receiving an unprecedented catch of fish – a boat filled with fish. When Peter saw this, he immediately fell down at Jesus’ feet, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”
It was the goodness of the Lord towards Peter that led him to repentance. And so it should be with us also.
