He who walks with wise men will be wise,
But the companion of fools will be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20 NKJV)
Walk with the wise and become wise;
associate with fools and get in trouble. (Proverbs 13:20 NLT)
The Scriptures make it clear that the company we keep has a significant impact on our character and actions. We become like those we spend time with, for better or for worse. To cultivate Christlike character, we must consciously choose to walk with the wise and distance ourselves from foolish influences.
Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marvelled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13 NKJV)
John and Peter were asked by the Jewish Council by what power they had healed a lame beggar. Peter, though only a fisherman, preached about the cross and the gospel and spoke boldly and confidently.
Consider the context. Peter and John have just healed a lame beggar at the Temple (Acts 3:1-10). When a crowd gathers, Peter though only a fisherman, preaches a gospel message (Acts 3:11-26). After they are arrested and thrown in jail, Peter addresses the religious leaders (Acts 4:1-12). In thinking about what he said, it helps to remember one key fact:
The source of the disciples’ boldness and confidence was not anything in themselves but was a direct result of the time they had spent with Jesus. By living with Him and communing with Him, they became like Him.
For three years, they sat at Jesus' feet, followed Him from town to town, and absorbed His teachings. During this time, He trained them, and they gradually became more like Him in their thoughts, attitudes, and actions. They walked with the wise and became wise themselves.
If we wish to be like Jesus, we need first to be with Jesus. This means spending time in prayer, reading the Scriptures, and engaging in fellowship with other believers. We must intentionally cultivate our relationship with Christ, seeking His guidance, wisdom, and strength. We do not become Christlike by accident. Our transformation is a lifelong journey, a process of sanctification through which the Holy Spirit works in us to conform us to the image of Christ.
Even their enemies could see that Jesus Christ had profoundly impacted these men. Could a statement like that be said of you? Could it be said of you and of me that we have been with Jesus?
