A certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisha, saying, “Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that your servant feared the Lord. And the creditor is coming to take my two sons to be his slaves.” (2 Kings 4:1)
A widow of a man who served on Prophet Elisha’s team petitions Elisha. There are some valuable lessons that we can glean from this text.
There Was Despair in Her Family:-
She cried out to Elisha. The word “cried” means “to moan; to weep uncontrollably; to shriek out of grief.” Her petition was not casual but fervent; from a broken heart. A broken heart is something that man despises but not the Lord. Take your broken heart to the Lord and cry out to Him. He will surely answer speedily. Psalm 51:17 says, “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit, a broken and a contrite heart— these, O God, You will not despise.”
There Was Death in Her Family:-
She was married to one of the “sons of the prophets”. These were the men who were in training under Prophet Elisha to be the prophets and preachers in Israel. Her husband, her lover, her friend, her provider, her protector, had been taken away from her in death. She was a woman totally broken. I heard the Spirit say, He will console those who mourn, He will give you beauty for your ashes and the oil of joy in exchange for your mourning. He will also give you the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. (Isaiah 61:3) Receive it in Jesus' name.
There Was Debt in Her Family:-
Since her husband is dead she cannot pay her bills. As a result, her creditors are coming to take her sons away as slaves so they can work off the debt. This was allowed under the Jewish Law (Leviticus 25:39). She has been deprived of her husband, now she is about to lose her sons as well. She is over her head in debt and she doesn’t see how she can make it. Some of you reading this are in huge debt. Your situation is about to change.
There Was Devotion in Her Family:-
In spite of all her problems (Despair, Death and Debt– 3Ds)
She held firm to her faith in the Lord. She did not curse God or accuse Him of the mess that she was in. Instead, she looked to God as her deliverer. Beloved, if you have cursed God, accused Him of the mess that you are in, ask Him to forgive you. Fast and pray for three days and humble yourself under His mighty hand. Never get casual with the LORD.
Sometimes, when some reach the point of despair, the world, the flesh and the devil are all going to tell you that God doesn’t see and that He doesn’t care. The fact is, He does care. Develop your daily devotion, your family devotion. Don’t miss attending the services at Karuna Sadan. He is the God who sees in secret and rewards openly.
