The disciples were trained under the greatest teacher ever. They had seen Him crucified and now He was alive in their midst. How excited they must have been? They must have felt like going and telling everyone they knew that Jesus Christ was indeed Lord and Messiah. And yet the Lord said to them, “Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry (wait)in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24:49)
As passionate and zealous as they were to go and tell the world about the risen Lord, Jesus cautioned them and encouraged them not to depend on their wisdom and strength to get the job done but instead wait in Jerusalem till the power of the Holy Spirit would engulf them.
No one likes to wait and in today’s society waiting is considered a waste of time, unproductive - you name it. The natural rhetoric of the human mind is why wait when more can be done right away. And yet, in God’s divine wisdom waiting can be powerful.
Waiting upon the Lord in prayer and worship is an act of surrender which is born out of obedience. Waiting upon the Lord meditating the word, in worship and prayer kills the desires of the flesh. This was a critical component of the disciples experiencing Pentecost and the same is true even today as well.
Scripture says in Isaiah 40:30-31, “Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint”.
The Hebrew word for wait is ‘qâvâh’ – it literally means to take time, or to linger in His presence wrapping yourself together with Him. Isn't that interesting! Psalm 25:5 says, ‘ Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my salvation; on You I wait all the day.
There is definitely a cost involved in the waiting process and that is why many find it harder to pay the price. But as a great man of God once said, “Obedient surrender to God is worth the cost.”
