Kindness Matters

Because God chose you to be the holy people He loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12)

Have you heard of the phrase “dressed for the occasion”? If there is a special occasion in the family or at the office, we make sure we are dressed appropriately. Likewise, Apostle Paul reminds us that each day we need to also clothe ourselves with kindness.

Kindness is more than just words. It’s more than good feelings. It’s a practical demonstration of love. True kindness is Spirit-produced (See Galatians 5:22).

One good reason to be kind to people that you come in contact with is because of the seedtime and harvest principle found in Genesis 8:22

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest,

Cold and heat, winter and summer,

And day and night shall not cease.”

This indicates that as long as the earth remains (and that’s a very long time), the principle of sowing and reaping will remain in place – both in the natural and spiritual realm.

When we are kind to the people we come in contact with, according to the law of seedtime and harvest, someone will surely act kindly towards us also – not necessarily the person to whom we showed kindness.

Proverbs 11:17 tells us, “Your own soul is nourished when you are kind; it is destroyed when you are cruel.” So you see, when you are kind, your own soul is edified. You also will be benefitted in some way or the other.

As David and his men were pursuing the Amalekites, they found an Egyptian in the field, who was abandoned by his Amalekite master because he fell ill. He was in pretty bad shape, for he had eaten no bread or drunk water for three days and three nights. (1 Samuel 30: 11-12)

In a world only concerned with ‘getting my way’, kindness stands out and always seeks the good of others. David and his men showed kindness to the man and nursed him to health. It was this same man who gave David critical information that helped David and his men recover all that the Amalekites stole from them. (1 Samuel 30:13-15)

The principle of kindness and restoration are deeply tied together. Don’t lose sight of this truth.

Lastly, our kindness reflects the heart of our Father. “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).
