As I mentioned yesterday, excellence must be a daily habit and not a one-time event. My simple definition of excellence is: Doing everyday common things in the best way possible regardless of someone is watching or not. The reality is that God sees our work and rewards us in ways we cannot fathom.
However, to live a life of excellence, we must also understand the purpose of excellence, or else it will become a thing that brings death and condemnation instead of life.
God does not ask us to do things with excellence so that we can earn some brownie points or earn His acceptance. In fact, we are already accepted by the Father because of what Jesus did for us on the cross for each one of us. We can never add anything more to the finished work of Christ. (Ephesians 1:6-7)
The real purpose that God wants us to walk in excellence is so that we can be a reflection of Him – like Father, like Son. By walking in excellence, we become more like Him.
God does everything with excellence.
You are more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. (Psalm 76:4)
Take a look at how God speaks about you and me (those who are in Christ)
As for the godly (the saints) who are in the land, they are the excellent, the noble, and the glorious, in whom is all my delight. (Psalm 16:3 Amplified)
So then, how should we pursue excellence?
Apostle Peter writes:
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. (1 Peter 2:9 ESV)
Notice the reason why we are called out of darkness into His marvellous light; it is to proclaim His excellencies.
So the first way to pursue excellence is simply to pursue God, and reflect on His character, and proclaim His excellent character traits to those with whom we come in contact.
Apostle Paul writes: “Therefore be imitators of God [copy Him and follow His example], as well-beloved children [imitate their father].” (Ephesians 5:1 Amplified)
God made us in his image and in His likeness. Now, as His redeemed children, we are being restored to that image in Christ.
