In the ever-twisting journey of faith, discerning the light of truth from the shadows of deception is pivotal. The Bible, the eternal Word of God, warns us of the grand deceiver, satan, who masquerades as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), weaving a tapestry of lies to lead the children of God astray.
satan never makes his appearance to us in hideous forms but is cloaked in seemingly divine radiance, causing millions to stray from the path of righteousness. So then, it is highly essential for every believer to be grounded in the Word of God, to discern the truth from the deceit, and to walk in the light of His eternal truth.
"And no wonder, for satan himself, masquerades as an angel of light." (2 Corinthians 11:14 NIV)
satan's grand deception is his ability to present himself not as the father of lies but as a source of divine revelation. He veils his deceitful intent under the guise of enlightenment, hoping to ensnare those ungrounded in God's Word. He has done this many times in past history, leading millions of Christians away from the true faith.
In Genesis 27, Jacob, clad in the garments of Esau, deceived his father, Isaac. Jacob's imitation of Esau signifies that a true gift or identity can be falsely mimicked, causing a rift between perception and reality. Jacob's deceptive act reinforces the need for discernment, to see beyond the outward appearance and perceive the underlying truth.
"To the law and to the testimony! If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn." (Isaiah 8:20 NIV) Those detached from the truth of God's Word wander in perpetual darkness, ensnared by the falsehoods of the enemy. Isaiah paints a sad picture of souls lost in shadows, estranged from God, and struggling with the hunger of spiritual emptiness. They become embittered, cursing God and seeking solace outside His divine presence. The spiritual blindness, a consequence of rejecting God's Word, often leads to anger and resentment against God, further alienating individuals from God.
"I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, 'Don't do that! I am a fellow servant with you and with your fellow prophets and with all who keep the words of this scroll. Worship God!'" (Revelation 22:8-9 NIV)
Even the apostle John was momentarily swayed by the celestial splendour of the angel, illustrating man's vulnerability. The admonition of the angel emphasizes our purpose to worship God alone, directing our devotion and adoration exclusively to our Creator God.
How do we overcome the deception?
"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." (Psalm 119:105 NIV) By immersing ourselves in the divine revelations of the Word, we are illuminated with the light of truth, guiding our steps on the path of righteousness and protecting us from the snares of deception.
Prayer
Eternal Father, grant us discernment to unveil deception and behold Your everlasting truth. May Your Word be the lamp that guides our steps, the light that dispels shadows, leading us to walk in righteousness and wisdom. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
