God's Unchanging Nature Amidst Human Fallibility

Life presents us with countless challenges, relationships, and experiences, and among these are encounters with people who claim to follow the Lord. Some of these individuals inspire us, leading us closer to our Creator. Yet others, sadly, might mislead, disappoint, or even betray our trust. In these moments of disillusionment, it’s essential to remember a foundational truth: People fail, but God does not.

"For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed." (Malachi 3:6)

In the above scripture, God declares His unchanging nature. It's a comforting thought that amidst the inconsistencies and uncertainties of the world, the Lord remains the same. His character, love, and promises stand firm.

It's a grave mistake to judge the character of God based on the behaviour of those who claim to follow Him. Consider this: if you were to judge the entirety of an ocean-based on a single drop of water, your perspective would be vastly limited and inaccurate. Similarly, judging God based on the actions of a few is a misguided endeavour.

In Psalm 146:3, it's written: "Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation." This verse is a gentle reminder that our trust should not primarily lie in man but in the Lord. While people, regardless of their positions or titles, can falter, God remains steadfast.

When Lord Jesus walked on earth, He showed us the perfect representation of God. Yet, even He faced betrayal by one of His own, Judas Iscariot. Jesus understood the frailty of humanity. He said in John 2:24-25, "But Jesus on his part did not entrust himself to them, because he knew all people and needed no one to bear witness about man, for he himself knew what was in man." Here, Jesus acknowledges our fallible nature, yet He still loves us unconditionally.

If Jesus, the Son of God, had the discernment to recognise the fallibility in those around Him and yet continued to love, teach, and sacrifice for them, how much more should we be encouraged to keep our faith anchored in God rather than shifting with the unpredictable tides of human behaviour?

So, how should we navigate our feelings when someone who claims to follow God lets us down?

1. Draw Close to God for Understanding:
When we’re hurt or disappointed, it's crucial to lean into God's presence. Dive into His Word. As mentioned in Psalm 119:105, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." His word will provide clarity, wisdom, and guidance.

2. Practice Forgiveness:
Holding onto bitterness or resentment can poison our souls and hinder our relationship with God. Remember, as the Lord's Prayer reminds us, "…forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." (Matthew 6:12)

While it’s natural to feel pain and disappointment when someone who claims to follow God misrepresents Him, let's be careful not to lose sight of the bigger picture. The imperfections of man should not lead us away from a perfect God. Instead, they should drive us closer to Him, seeking His unchanging love, grace, and wisdom.
Confession
I decree and declare that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
