Rejection is an inescapable part of human existence, an affliction of the heart that knows no bounds. From the young child picked last in a playground game to the adult turned away from a dream opportunity, the sting of not being chosen can leave scars. But if anyone understands this pain, it is Jesus.
“Even if my father and mother abandon me, the Lord will hold me close.” (Psalm 27:10 NLT)
As we journey through the Gospels, we see a Savior who was no stranger to rejection. In His hometown, Nazareth, those who had watched Him grow up turned away from Him. His own brothers doubted His mission. He came to the very people He loved, the chosen ones of Israel, and they dismissed Him. Even on the cross, during His darkest hour, it seemed like His Father had forsaken Him. (Matthew 27:46)
Yet, Prophet Isaiah, hundreds of years before Jesus walked the earth, prophesied about Him:
“He was despised and rejected by men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.” (Isaiah 53:3)
However, even in the face of rejection, Jesus knew who He was. He understood His purpose, His mission, and most importantly, His identity as God's beloved Son. And this profound knowledge kept Him anchored.
“The more you know your identity in Lord Jesus, the more peace you will have.”
The sting of rejection may pierce our hearts, but we must remember that our worth isn't determined by the world's fleeting standards. Our true identity rests in being children of God. When the world turns its back, God’s embrace remains steadfast.
Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:16-17 (NLT), “The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now, if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
Imagine that! As believers, our identity is rooted in being heirs to the King of kings. In this light, the rejection of the world becomes inconsequential.
So, how do we overcome rejection? By immersing ourselves in God's Word, by constantly reminding ourselves of who we are in Christ, and by holding onto the truth of His unconditional love for us.
Take a leaf out of Jesus' life. When faced with rejection, He didn’t grow bitter. Instead, He sought places where His message would be welcomed and celebrated. He didn't waste time seeking approval; He was on a divine mission.
Always remember, your worth is not tied to the number of likes and shares or the applause of the crowd. Seek God’s approval above all. ““For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (Galatians 1:10)
In overcoming rejection, let your heart find solace in the One who was rejected for our sake so that we might be accepted eternally.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, when rejection wounds us, remind us of our true worth in You. Strengthen our hearts and anchor our identity in Christ, Your Son. Let Your love saturate my very being. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
