Character Over Talent

In the annals of history, Abraham Lincoln stands as a towering figure, not merely for his leadership during one of America's most tumultuous times but for his profound understanding of human nature. His words, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power,” pierce the very core of what it means to be a person of virtue.

The world often dazzles us with displays of talent. From athletes breaking records to musicians moving hearts, talent is celebrated, showcased, and even idolised. Yet beneath the surface of these achievements lies something more profound, more enduring: character.

"Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart." (1 Samuel 16:7)

Talent might shine in the spotlight, but character is forged in the shadows. It is the choices we make when no one is watching, the sacrifices we embrace without an audience, and the integrity we uphold despite no accolades. While our gifts and talents might offer us the platforms and stages of this world, it is our character that determines how long we'll remain there and the legacy we leave behind.

"A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." (Proverbs 22:1)

Our character speaks louder than our capabilities. It is the compass that guides our decisions, the anchor in our storms, and the legacy we pass on. As the writer of Proverbs states, "Live right, and you will eat from the life-giving tree. And if you act wisely, others will follow." (Proverbs 11:30 CEV) The fruit of character nourishes not only us but those who come after us.

But how do we build this elusive character?

Character is often built in the crucible of challenges. It's in the quiet moments of choosing the harder right over the easier wrong. It's in seeking wisdom and understanding, even when the world offers shortcuts.

"But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere." (James 3:17)

When we embrace Godly wisdom, our character aligns with divine principles. It's not about avoiding failures or mistakes but about rising every time we fall, learning, growing, and leaning into God's grace.

As we journey through life, our aspirations might be to reach the pinnacle of our fields or to achieve grand milestones. Yet, let us remember that to truly impact lives and leave an indelible mark, we must prioritise being over doing. As we enhance our character, we become magnets for like-minded individuals. People are drawn to authenticity, to those whose words match their actions, whose promises are kept, and whose lives exude the love and grace of Christ.

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience." (Colossians 3:12)

Imagine a world where people valued character over charisma, substance over style, and integrity over influence. As bearers of Christ's light, we have the privilege and responsibility to lead by example. Let our lives be testimonies, not just of the talents God has endowed us with but of the character He has built within us.
