Health and Healing
In the garden of faith, there blooms a question that has puzzled many—a question about the role of doctors and medicine in the life of a believer. Can Christians go to doctors? This query, while simple, touches upon the profound interplay of faith, prayer, and the tangible means through which God extends His healing.
Scripture offers a balm for our doubts and a salve for our understanding. We see this in the care provided by the Good Samaritan, who uses oil and wine—common treatments of the day—to tend to wounds (Luke 10:34). We hear of the healing properties of the balm of Gilead (Jeremiah 8:22), a metaphor for the soothing, restorative power of God's provision.
Luke, the historian of the New Testament, was himself a physician. His writings reflect a meticulous mind and a compassionate heart. Apostle Paul's affectionate mention of him as “the beloved physician” (Colossians 4:14) does not stand as an isolated commendation but as a divine endorsement of the medical vocation.
The dilemma faced by King Asa (2 Chronicles 16:12) is telling. It is not his seeking of physicians that was his downfall, but rather his sole reliance on them, forsaking the Lord's counsel. This teaches us a vital lesson: as believers, we are to engage doctors and medicines, but not at the expense of our faith and dependence on God.
God, in His infinite wisdom, has filled the earth with knowledge and resources to aid in our healing. Doctors and medicines are gifts from the Great Physician, tools in God’s workshop used to mend and sustain the bodies He has intricately woven together.
Our faith finds its ultimate resting place not in the hands of the healers but in the hands of God who heals. “He himself bore our sins” in his body on the cross, so that we might die to sins and live for righteousness; “by his wounds you have been healed” (1 Peter 2:24). Every cure and every recovery is a testament to His mercy, a whisper of the eternal restoration that awaits us.
As we navigate the path to health and healing, we are called to do so with wisdom and discernment, valuing the expertise of medical professionals while seeking guidance and comfort from the Lord. We remember the words of James, urging us to pray over the sick, anointing them with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14). This act is not a dismissal of medical aid but a sacred complement to it.
The anointing oil of faith and the balm of medicine work in tandem within God's providence. They are not competitors but co-workers in the ministry of healing. In every diagnosis and through every treatment, our hearts are to be tuned to the voice of our Shepherd, trusting that His rod and staff will guide us to still waters and restore our souls (Psalm 23).
As you walk the journey of health and healing, may you see every doctor and every remedy as a vessel of God's grace. May you hold tightly to the truth that while physicians treat, it is God who heals.
Prayer
Father, grant us the wisdom to seek healing through Your gifts of medicine and the faith to trust in Your sovereign care. In every trial, be our comfort and guide. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
