The heart (spirit-man) is the source of everything you and I do.
I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings. (Jeremiah 17:10)
The Lord Himself searches the heart, the inner person of man. Why does He do that? It is because of the very issues of life—our actions, works, pursuits, etc.—all proceed from the heart. What we do in word and deed is, first of all, a product of what we are on the inside.
Stop allowing your heart to be carried away with every compliment, with every smile, with every stare. It is then when your heart starts entering all these fantasies. This, in turn, severely affects your relationships, your career - it affects everything because your heart is the source of everything you do.
Why must we diligently guard our hearts?
Because our heart is under constant attack.
When Solomon says to guard your heart, he implies that you are living in a combat zone—one in which there can be casualties.
Many of us are oblivious to the reality of this war. We have an enemy who is bent on our destruction. He not only opposes God, but he opposes everything that is aligned with Him—including us.
There are people listening to me, reading this whose hearts are broken simply because they did not guard.
The Enemy uses all kinds of weapons to attack our hearts. These attacks often come in the form of some circumstance that leads to disappointment, discouragement, or even disillusionment. In these situations, one is often tempted to quit—to walk off the field and surrender.
This is why if you and I are going to survive and revive others, we must diligently guard our hearts. If we lose heart, we have lost everything.
Prayer
Father, pour out Your love into my inner man by the Holy Spirit, that my heart may overflow in love back to You and to others (Romans 5:5).
Father, I also ask that You impart Your love for Lord Jesus into my heart (John 17:26).
Father, I ask for the grace to love You with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30).
Father, allow me to comprehend Jesus’ love for me and to abide in it—stay connected to it (John 15:9).
