Now Jabez was more honourable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, "Because I bore him in pain." (1 Chronicles 4:9)
Growing up for Jabez must not have been an easy task. He had many brothers, and how they must have ridiculed him time and again because of his name.
I believe Jabez was inspired by Jacob. His parents, too, had named him Jacob, meaning 'deceiver'. All his life, he carried that stigma. But one day, as Jacob wrestled with God in prayer the whole night, there was a turnaround in his life. The Lord himself changed his name from Jacob to Israel, meaning 'Prince with God'. From that day onwards, Jacob's life was never the same. (Genesis 32)
Jabez probably had a revelation that if God could do it for Jacob, then God could do it for him also. For God is not a partial God. (Job 34:19) You and I, too, need to assimilate this truth deep into our spirits.
One day Jabez decided enough is enough. One thing was clear to him, that if he was ever going to see a change in his life, then God alone could bring that turnaround.
And (so) Jabez called on the God of Israel (1 Chronicles 4:10)
True prayer will reveal to you great and mighty things, which you never even dreamed of. Jabez understood the importance of prayer in receiving his breakthrough, and so must you.
Prayer is the meeting point between divinity and humanity. If there is a man or a woman to pray, then there is a God to answer. More victories are won on the knees than on the battlefield.
"Therefore do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For after all these things, the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. (Matthew 6:31-33)
A man or woman who seeks the Lord diligently will never be at the mercy of circumstances.

1. Father, in the name of Jesus, I receive the power to embrace your word daily in my life.
