"He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels." (Revelation 3:5)
These white garments symbolize the purity and holiness that we receive through faith in Christ. They represent the perfect righteousness of Lord Jesus, which covers our sins and allows us to stand blameless before a holy God.
After Adam and Eve sinned, they realized their nakedness and attempted to cover themselves with fig leaves (Genesis 3:7). However, their own efforts to hide their shame and guilt were futile. It was God who provided them with garments of skin (Genesis 3:21), foreshadowing the ultimate covering of righteousness that would come through Lord Jesus Christ.
Just as Adam and Eve needed a covering from God, we too need a righteousness that is not our own. Prophet Isaiah declared, "All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags" (Isaiah 64:6). Our own attempts at righteousness fall short of God's perfect standard. But the good news is that through faith in Christ, we are clothed in His righteousness. As the apostle Paul wrote, "This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe" (Romans 3:22).
When we are clothed in Christ's righteousness, we have the privilege of entering into God's presence with confidence. Hebrews reminds us, "Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water" (Hebrews 10:19-22).
In the parable of the wedding feast, Jesus describes a man who tried to enter the banquet without the proper wedding garment (Matthew 22:11-14). The man was speechless when questioned and was ultimately cast out. This parable teaches us that we cannot approach God on our own merits. We must be clothed in the righteousness of Christ, which is freely offered to us through faith.
Apostle Paul beautifully summarizes the exchange that takes place when we put our faith in Christ: "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21). Christ took our sin upon Himself and gave us His righteousness in return. What an incredible gift!
Have you accepted this gift of Christ's righteousness? Are you relying on your own efforts to be right with God, or are you trusting in the finished work of Jesus on the cross? Take a moment to reflect on the amazing grace that has been extended to you. If you have not yet received Christ's righteousness, today is the day to embrace His free gift of salvation. And if you are already clothed in His righteousness, let your life be a testament to the transforming power of His grace.
May we never take for granted the precious garments of salvation that Christ has provided for us. Let us live each day in gratitude, walking worthy of the righteousness we have received.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for clothing me in the righteousness of Your Son. May I never take this precious gift for granted, but instead live each day in gratitude and devotion to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
