“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and forever. Amen.” (2 Peter 3:18)
Many misunderstand the concept of grace. They believe it is a provision for a pardon from sin and an excuse to continue a reckless lifestyle. Grace isn’t an excuse to justify sin. The Bible says in Romans 6:1, “What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?”
God’s purpose for the provision of grace is that all men come to salvation and live righteously. He doesn’t permit that we frustrate His grace by continuing in sin and ignoring His call for sanctification. Beloved, you are called into the household of faith by His grace, and you are expected to grow in it. As with any revelation from God, there will always be a minority who misunderstand and abuse God’s amazing grace.
Growing in grace is not leaving all responsibilities about your spiritual life to God, as many may think that grace should allow them to become lazy. No! Growing in grace is growing in the Knowledge of God and His word. It is growing in righteousness, sanctification, and holiness. God desires that all men grow in grace and become Holy as He is, to mature as Christians, and be sanctified, separated unto Him in truth and love. Given to ministry of prayer and the word. (Acts 6:4)
To grow in grace doesn’t mean an increase in the grace God has given us. Instead, it’s the depth of understanding of what Christ has done for us and living out this truth by giving ourselves to the word and its workings in our lives. As a child of God, you are expected to understand this grace you have received. It’s a critical gift for entrance to God’s fullness and a sustainer of a believer. Grace enables a Christians’ effortless growth!
Even as we mark milestones in our walk with God and become more intimate with the Holy Spirit, we grow in grace as we become more like Jesus, transformed into His image and becoming less of our former selves. Do you find yourself struggling to be obedient? Battling with secret sins? Having no desire or appetite for prayer and the word?
You have to acknowledge the provision made available in God’s grace. The truth is, you cannot walk the walk of salvation without increasing grace. Good news! God, in His infinite wisdom, has made this grace available for as many as want to be partakers of it. Our walk of righteousness is not of our strength but by His grace. Understanding this will make you rely on Him for your need and growth.
Growing in God’s grace is the only way to become firm in our relationship with Him. Choose to grow in grace by making a conscious decision to be a student of the word and a lover of prayer today. The Lord’s grace is as available as you reach out for more of it. Shalom!
