He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed. (Proverbs 13:20)
We are greatly influenced by the people that surround us. You become like the people you spend the most time with, so choose your friends carefully.
If you spend time with angry, resentful people, you risk becoming an angry, resentful person yourself. That’s because attitudes are contagious.
Scripture says, if you surround yourself with fools, their foolishness will eventually rub off on you. When Solomon refers to someone as a fool, he isn’t saying the individual is ignorant. Rather, these individuals are indifferent to the Truth and focused on their own satisfaction. They foolishly believe they know what is best for their life. Their search for fulfilment in all the wrong things.
How does one walk with the wise?
One of the ways to walk with the wise is to read their books and the stories of their lives. Walk with them through the lines they toiled over and let them tell you their best and wisest thoughts. You will learn from their mistakes and their successes. Someone said, “Leaders are readers.”
You can also walk with wise people by hearing them. Go where they will be speaking. Listen to them via the Internet, or recording etc. A pastor from Kolhapur wrote to me. He even testified in a W3 conference held sometime back. He said, Pastor, I would constantly listen to your sermons and watch your testimony videos on Youtube. Faith started increasing, and my church has grown to more than 300 people.”
Lastly, don’t forget to walk with the wisest man ever – Lord Jesus Christ. Interact with Him every day through the word and prayer. Read the following scripture carefully:
The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13 NLT)
