Pride
Once a church member went to his pastor, who was greatly used in the prophetic gifts and asked, “Pastor, could you tell me which spirit is opposing me?” The church member was expecting a very exotic answer and was stumped when the pastor replied, “God’s Spirit is the one that is opposing you because you are resisting God Himself.”
Please go through the following scriptures carefully:
Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (James 4:7)
Resist him (the devil), steadfast in the faith.(1 Peter 5:9)
The above scriptures clearly tell us that a Christian is to first submit to God and then resist the devil. This is how we can overcome every sinister scheme of the enemy.
The good news is that even the youngest of Christians can successfully resist the most darkest forces of the enemy by standing strong in Christ. However, there is one aspect which is often overlooked, and that is where all the problems arise.
“God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)
Be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (1 Peter 5:5)
The fact remains that we are to resist the devil in the strength of the Lord. However, many times Christians are resisting God Himself. Pride is resistance to God and His ways. This is when the Lord Himself stands opposing us.
Numbers 22 speaks of a man called Balaam.
Apparently, Balaam had established a great reputation! It was said that if he cursed a person, he was cursed, and if he blessed a person, they were blessed. Balaam knew the Lord, and everybody knew that he did. Now the Lord had clearly told Balaam not to go with the Moabites, and yet Balaam went. (Numbers 22:21)
Then God’s anger was aroused (against Balaam) because he went, and the Angel of the Lord took His stand in the way as an adversary against him. Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw the Angel of the Lord standing in the way with His drawn sword in His hand…(Numbers 22:22,31)
When we resist God, He resists us. Our resistance in such circumstances is entirely futile. Humility is the opposite of pride.
It could be that the Lord has been speaking to you about changing certain areas of your lifestyle, and you have been postponing the change indefinitely. Maybe the Lord has been impressing on you the need to sow a special financial seed, the need to forgive someone or set a specific time for prayer. Whatever may be the case, humble yourself before God by no longer resisting Him.
You may have been not seeing breakthroughs, and you are blaming the devil for it when the opposition could have been coming from the Lord Himself because of pride issues. Are you in any way resisting the Lord?
Prayer
Father, in the name of Jesus, forgive me for resisting You by not heeding Your Word. Give me a heart that readily obeys Your Word. Amen.
