Pornography
In a world overflowing with temptation, it’s all too easy for individuals to fall into the snares of pornography—a destructive force that preys on the vulnerability of the human heart. Recently, I received an email from a young man who shared his journey of battling and ultimately overcoming this addiction.
He wrote, “I was introduced to pornography at a young age by a friend whose dad had some magazines, and I quickly became addicted. It just had a pull on me. By the time I was in high school, the battle with lust had begun to consume me. Pastor Michael, I joined you on the 21-day fast, and since then, I am free from this evil.” This young man’s victory over pornography is not just his own; it is a victory for the Kingdom of God and an inspiration for countless others who struggle in silence.
The Plague of Pornography
Pornography is more than just a personal vice; it is a plague that provides a gateway for individuals to indulge in sexual sins. The entire purpose of pornography is to excite and inflame lust, leading to actions that violate the teachings of Lord Jesus. In Matthew 5:28, “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This scripture makes it clear that sin begins in the thought realm.
What may start as mere curiosity can quickly spiral into an addiction that consumes the mind and soul, leading individuals down a path of destruction. The story of King David and Bathsheba in 2 Samuel 11:2-4 serves as a biblical example of how unchecked lust can lead to devastating consequences. David’s initial gaze led to adultery and murder, showing the far-reaching effects of a single sinful desire.
The Destruction of Marriages and Families
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of pornography is its destructive impact on marriages and families. It’s no exaggeration to say that pornography has destroyed millions of marriages. It creates unrealistic expectations, erodes trust, and often leads to infidelity, both emotional and physical. The addiction to pornography can cause a person to become distant, secretive, and emotionally unavailable, driving a wedge between spouses and ultimately tearing families apart.
Job 31:1 offers a powerful declaration that can serve as a guide for those seeking to protect their hearts and minds from the lure of pornography: “I have made a covenant with my eyes; Why then should I look upon a young woman?” Job’s commitment to purity was not just a physical act but a spiritual and mental one as well. Making a covenant with our eyes is a proactive step in guarding our hearts against the temptations of this world.
A Call to Action: Finding Freedom in Christ
If you or someone you know is struggling with pornography, know that there is hope. Freedom from this bondage is possible through the power of Christ. The young man who shared his testimony found freedom by joining me on a 21-day fast. Fasting joined with prayer and reading of the Word, is a powerful tool that can bring about deliverance from even the most entrenched habits.
James 5:16 encourages us to “confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.” Don’t be afraid to get prayed over by anointed men and women of God. [Just some practical advice: Men should get prayed over by men and women by women]
Moreover, immerse yourself in the Word of God. Scriptures like Philippians 4:8, which urges us to think on things that are true, noble, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, can help reframe our minds and steer us away from harmful thoughts and behaviors.
Embrace the Journey of Freedom
Overcoming an addiction to pornography is not an easy journey, but it is one that is possible with God’s help. Just as the young man found freedom, so can you. The freedom you seek is within reach, and your journey toward it can inspire others to find the same freedom in Christ. May the Lord strengthen and guide you on this path to victory.
Prayer
1. Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask that You cleanse my heart and mind from every impure thought and desire. Help me to focus on things that are true, noble, and pure, so that I may walk in holiness before You. I declare that my mind is set on things above and not on earthly temptations. (Philippians 4:8)
2. Holy Spirit, renew my spirit and fill me with Your power. Let the desires of the flesh be crucified, and may I be led by Your Spirit in every aspect of my life. I surrender my will to You and ask for a complete transformation from within. In Jesus’ name. (Galatians 5:16)
3. Heavenly Father, I ask for Your healing in the areas where pornography has wounded my soul and relationships. Restore what has been broken, and bring healing to my mind, heart, and relationships. I trust in Your ability to make all things new. In Jesus’ name. (Psalm 147:3)
4. Father, in the name of Jesus, I pray for Your divine protection against the enemy's schemes to draw me back into the sin of pornography. I put on the full armor of God, standing against the powers of darkness, and declare victory in the name of Jesus over every stronghold and addiction in my life. (Ephesians 6:11-12)
