Spiritual Clothes
You are living a brand new kind of life that is continually learning more and more of what is right and trying constantly to be more and more like Christ, who created this new life within you. (Colossians 3:10 TLB)
Though we are children of God through the perfect sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ, very often, we don’t always act like it.
The only way the people around us can know whether we are Christian or not is by our behaviour or our lifestyle.
The act of accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour was most likely done privately, and so the only way to announce that you are a real Christian is by manifesting the fruit of the Spirit, which then becomes a crucial indicator of the faith that you and I profess.
Apostle Paul explains the importance of doing away with old ways of living. He instructs us to kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in you, for you have stripped off the old (unregenerate) self with its evil practices. And have clothed yourselves with the new [spiritual self, (In Colossians 3:5,9-10, AMPC).
Words like “strip off” and “clothe” show that much effort is required on our part.
Apostle Paul clearly points out what we are to put on:
1. We must clothe ourselves with tender-hearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. (Colossians 3:12 NLT)
2. We must make allowance for each other’s faults and forgive anyone who offends us. Remember, the Lord forgave us, so we must forgive others. (Colossians 3:13 NLT)
As you and I put on these characteristics, you and I will move closer to our goal to become more like Jesus.
I hope this challenges you to do some real soul searching. Always remember, we are here as ambassadors for Christ and so must represent Him right. May the Holy Spirit enable us to live a life that is pleasing to God and, by so doing, draw others to Him not just by our words but also by our deeds.
Prayer
1. Father, in the name of Jesus, give me grace to forgive those who offend me.
2.Father, in the name of Jesus, I ask You to clothe me with Your tender-hearted mercies, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. By faith, I receive this new clothing, and I thank You for it.
