Looking Unto Jesus

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. (Hebrews 12:2)

In 1960 there was a famous race in Canada between two great runners - John Landy and Roger Banister. John Landy had been leading for most of the race and there was only about two hundred meters to the finish. This was when John Landy looked behind to see where his opponent was placed. At that very moment Roger Banister passed him on the outside.

He lost the race and will perhaps go down in history as the runner who looked back. He should have been concerned with running his own race. But he took his eyes off the finish line and looked at his opponent, and that cost him the race. Make every effort so that history does not repeat itself with you.

Are you aware that you cannot really focus your eyes on two things at the same time.

The amplified says it nicely. “Looking away [from all that will distract] to Jesus, Who is the Leader and the Source of our faith …(Hebrews 12:2)

There are people who have given up on the race because all this while they were looking to a leader, a pastor, a prophet, an apostle etc. Then the leader to whom they were looking upto failed somewhere, sometime and now these people are totally heart broken. They have backslidden from their faith.

While you can certainly learn from a leader, a pastor etc, he or she however good, is not our perfect example. You don’t look at them and run your race. You need to look to Jesus. He alone is our perfect example. He is the author and the finisher of our faith.

We become like what we behold. As we run and keep our eyes on Jesus, God works on us, making us more and more like His Son. Ultimately, He will bring us to our long-awaited reward.
