Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. (Matthew 4:1)
This was just after the baptism of Lord Jesus Christ. I believe every person after the Jordan experience will be led into the wilderness experience.
Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. This means that this testing was God-ordained. The Father wanted Jesus to be there – in a hard place. It was not a mistake or a wrong turn of events. The same is also true in our lives.
This time alone with God would set the foundation for Jesus’ ministry. Times of testing, when everyone seems to have deserted you and you are alone with God are often foundations for something big that will be built.
“When He (Jesus) had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterwards He was hungry.” (Matthew 4:2)
Did Lord Jesus Drink Water?
Scripture clearly says, “He was hungry”. This means Lord Jesus did not eat anything during those forty days. This is an example of ‘Total Fasting’
Medical experts state that the typical man or woman cannot live more than ten days without water; however, some individuals have lived 21 days without water.
“If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” (Matthew 4:3)
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. (Matthew 4:6)
For every temptation of the devil, Lord Jesus responded with “it is written”. This shows Lord Jesus’ mastery of the written Word. It also is a perfect example for us to emulate. We must counter every lie of the devil by speaking the word of God.
Feed your Spirit
You have probably heard the phrase “You are what you eat” before, and it is usually a statement that is made in reference to food. However, it can also be applied to the things we “feed” our spirits on a daily basis.
The Bible says in Colossians 3:16, “Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly”(NIV). The Apostle Paul is telling us to let the Word of God take up residence in our lives in a rich, profound, and life-giving way.
And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came.. (Matthew 4:2-3)
The greatest temptations come soon after your greatest breakthroughs. The tempter came soon after Lord Jesus had finished fasting for forty days.
The different crisis the Lord Jesus faced
- hunger
- health
- identity
We too face many critical situations in life. The only way we can be victorious is by speaking the Word into the face of every crisis. For Lord Jesus speaking the Word into the face of crisis was not just ‘great oratory’ it was His lifestyle.
Then He said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” (Matthew 4:19)
Lord Jesus said, “Follow Me, and I will make you…”
The making process is in the following.
If a person is truly following Jesus, then he or she will surely become a fisher of men and women.
Genuinely following Jesus is not without a price.
They immediately left their nets and followed Him. (Matthew 4:20)
and immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him. (Matthew 4:22)
