God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; (Hebrews 1:1-2)
The Word of God clearly teaches that….
- God spoke at various times
- God spoke in various ways
- God spoke in times past (yesterday)
- God speaks today and will continue to speak to us
When Jesus Christ came to earth to be our Savior, He was the ultimate expression of the manifestation of God’s glory in the world. “Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high” (Hebrews 1:3).
having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. (Hebrews 1:4)
1. Jesus is better than the angels is because He has a more excellent name than they do
Jesus is the Son of God. No angel ever received this title. No angel was ever called "the Son of God. Angels are fantastic creatures. They are supernatural. They have tremendous power. They are able to enter the presence of God. But Jesus is better because He is the Son.
While it is true that angels were referred to as sons of God in a general way, such a title was never ascribed to any angel personally. Moreover, God never once said to an angel, “I will be to him a father.” (Hebrews 1:6)
God reaffirmed this unique relationship at Jesus’ baptism and addressed Him directly and individually as His Son; ‘Then a voice came from heaven, “You are My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” ( Mark. 1:11)
2. Jesus is better than the angels is because He is worshiped by the angels.
But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says:
“Let all the angels of God worship Him.” (Hebrews 1:6)
3. Jesus is better than the angels is because they are servants
And of the angels He says:
“Who makes His angels spirits
And His ministers a flame of fire.”
But to the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. (Hebrews 1:7-8)
The contrast is quite evident here:
Jesus is sitting as King, while angels are sent as servants.
There is only one King, while there are many servant angels.
4. Jesus is better than the angels is because He is God
But to the Son He says:
“Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom. (Hebrews 1:8)
You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.” (Hebrews 1:9)
What does it mean to love righteousness?
To love righteousness means to delight in integrity, virtue, and uprightness in purpose, thought, and action.
What does it mean to hate lawlessness?
To hate lawlessness mean to hate injustice and iniquity
What are things you love? Do you love to pray and read the word? Notice, I did not say, “do you pray and read the word?” One can pray and read the word out of a sense of duty and another can pray and read the word out of love. This will attract the anointing over your life.
“You, Lord, in the beginning, laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the work of Your hands. (Hebrews 1:10)
Even the earth has a foundation. Foundations are laid in the beginning.
Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation? (Hebrews 1:14)
Angels are spirits and they can at times assume human form. This is known as an "angelophany"- the appearance of an angel. (Acts 1:10-11)
They are referred to as ‘ministering spirits’ meaning servants. Despite all the services that angels render to believers in Christ, it is important to note that angels are sent. The Lord, He is the one who sends them. Angels do not act on their own accord.
