Fasting and Prayer
I Shall Not Die
“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.”
— Psalm 118:17 (NKJV)
God’s Will for Your Life
It is the will of God that you live to fulfill your divine destiny and die at a good old age. God’s plan for your life does not include premature death, sickness, pain, or disease.
Death means “separation or termination.” The devil’s desire is to separate man from God and terminate divine assignments before their time. Therefore, believers must resist and destroy his weapons through faith and prayer.
Three Major Types of Death
1. Spiritual Death
Spiritual death occurs when God’s Spirit is separated from man’s spirit. The first death Adam and Eve experienced was spiritual, not physical.
“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
— Genesis 2:17
When they disobeyed, God’s presence departed from them — that was death’s first victory.
2. Physical Death
Physical death is the separation of the spirit from the physical body.
After Adam experienced spiritual death, it took 930 years before his physical death occurred. The physical death was simply the manifestation of the spiritual death that had already taken place.
“So all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years; and he died.”
— Genesis 5:5
3. Eternal Death
Eternal death is the permanent separation of the human spirit from God, without remedy or redemption.
“The Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel… These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”
— 2 Thessalonians 1:7–9
This everlasting destruction is what the Bible calls the second death.
“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
— Revelation 21:8
Causes of Premature Death
Premature death occurs when someone dies before fulfilling their divine potential — often at the point of enjoying the fruit of their labor. Such tragedies reflect the operation of the enemy who comes “to steal, to kill, and to destroy” (John 10:10).
1. A Sinful Lifestyle
“And Achan answered Joshua and said, ‘Indeed I have sinned against the Lord God of Israel… I saw among the spoils a beautiful Babylonian garment, two hundred shekels of silver, and a wedge of gold… I coveted them and took them.’”
“Why have you troubled us? The Lord will trouble you this day.” So all Israel stoned him with stones… Therefore the name of that place has been called the Valley of Achor to this day.
— Joshua 7:20–21, 25–26
Achan died a premature death because of sin and disobedience. Persistent rebellion against God eventually attracts judgment. It may not happen immediately, but it will surely manifest unless there is repentance.
2. The Wickedness of Men
“Who sharpen their tongues like swords, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows—bitter words.”
— Psalm 64:3“Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and… Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.”
— Genesis 4:8
The wickedness of the human heart drives men to destroy others for selfish reasons. Many innocent lives have been cut short through envy, jealousy, and betrayal.
3. Spiritual Attacks
“But the woman conceived and bore a son at the appointed time of which Elisha had told her.
And the child grew. Now it happened one day that he went out to his father, to the reapers.
And he said to his father, ‘My head, my head!’ So he said to a servant, ‘Carry him to his mother.’
When he had taken him and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.”
— 2 Kings 4:17–20
The Shunammite woman’s son died mysteriously — there was no visible cause. It was a spiritual attack on his health and destiny.
In the Old Testament, demonic operations were visible yet poorly understood. But in the New Testament, Christ exposed the powers of darkness and gave us authority over them.
“Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.”
— Luke 10:19
Spiritual arrows are real. That is why the Psalmist declares:
“You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, nor of the arrow that flies by day.”
— Psalm 91:5
Everything that happens in the physical realm first originates in the spiritual realm. It takes divine power to overcome the forces of premature death.
David escaped countless assassination attempts by King Saul, yet Abel — innocent and pure — was slain by his own brother. (1 Samuel 18:11–12; Genesis 4:8)
This shows that innocence alone does not guarantee safety — spiritual empowerment and discernment do.
Today, we rise in faith and reject every evil agenda designed to terminate our lives prematurely.
Declare aloud:
“I shall not die but live and declare the works of the Lord.”
Every weapon of death formed against me is destroyed in Jesus’ name.
Nothing in my life, family, or destiny shall die before its time. I will fulfill my divine purpose and complete my assignment to the glory of God!”
