A Cry for Mercy Above the Noise

Seeing Beyond What the Eyes Can See

Life can feel like a crowded street full of noise, pressure, and distractions. We are often guided by what we can see, feel, or immediately understand. But the Bible shows us that God often works beyond what the eyes can see.

In Luke 18:35–43, we read about a blind man sitting by the road near Jericho. He could not see anything, yet this man teaches us a powerful lesson about faith, faith that does not depend on sight, but on trust.

Faith Begins With Hearing

Though the man was blind, his hearing was sharp. When he heard a crowd passing by, he asked what was happening. They told him, “Jesus of Nazareth is passing by.”

The Bible says:

“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”—Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

This man had never seen Jesus, yet something stirred in his heart when he heard His name. Faith was born not through sight, but through hearing. Sometimes God allows one sense to be limited so another can be strengthened. When we listen carefully to God’s Word, faith begins to rise—even before we see any change. This is why you must read the Word of God daily so that you grow in faith.

Refusing to Be Silenced

When the blind man began to cry out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me,” the crowd told him to keep quiet. But instead of stopping, he shouted even louder. As you go through life, there will always be someone trying to shut you down.

The Bible describes faith this way:

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”—Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

This man had no physical evidence that he would be healed. Yet his faith was real and strong. True faith does not give up when others discourage us. It grows stronger under pressure. Faith speaks even when circumstances say, “Be quiet.”

Calling Him the Son of David

The blind man called Jesus “Son of David.” This was not just a polite title—it was a declaration of belief. The Jews knew that the Messiah would come from David’s line.

By using this title, the man was saying, “I believe You are the promised Saviour.” Though blind in the eyes of men, he saw clearly in his spirit. Faith often recognises what men of this world overlook.

A Simple but Powerful Prayer

Lord Jesus stopped and asked him an important question:

“What do you want Me to do for you?”
—Luke 18:41 (NKJV)

The man replied plainly, “Lord, that I may receive my sight.”

Jesus answered:

“Receive your sight; your faith has healed you.”—Luke 18:42 (NIV)

This shows us something important: faith must be specific. The man did not speak vaguely. He knew what he needed and trusted Jesus completely.

Lord Jesus once said:

“Everything is possible for one who believes.”—Mark 9:23 (NIV)

A Miracle That Touched Many

When the man received his sight, he did not walk away quietly. He followed Jesus and praised God. The Bible says the people who saw this also praised God.

Lord Jesus teaches us:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”—Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

One man’s miracle became many people’s testimony. When God changes our lives, it is never meant to stop with us. Make sure you testify of what the Lord has done in your life.

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

The blind man’s journey reminds us of a deeper truth:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” —2 Corinthians 5:7 (NKJV)

Lord Jesus did more than restore physical sight. He opened spiritual vision. Faith helps us see God’s hand at work even when nothing looks clear.

The blind man near Jericho teaches us that faith does not need perfect conditions. It only needs a willing heart. Even a cry that begins in weakness can stop heaven’s attention.

No matter how noisy life becomes, the voice of faith still matters. When faith speaks, Jesus listens, and when Jesus responds, everything can change.

Prayer
Father, grant us the faith that we may see Your hand at work in our lives and trust in Your power to heal and restore. May our cries of hope rise above the noise of doubt, leading us into Your very presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
