In our journey of faith, we all hit moments where we need to stop and realize just how much power God actually has. A famous example of this is the story of a man named Jabez. His life started with a heavy burden, but it ended with a miracle because he knew who to ask for help.
The Prayer of Jabez: Turning Pain into Blessing
Jabez’s story is found in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10-NKJV
"Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.’ And Jabez called on the God of Israel saying, ‘Oh, that You would bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that Your hand would be with me, and that You would keep me from evil, that I may not cause pain!’ So God granted him what he requested."
In those times, a person’s name was often seen as their destiny. Being named "Pain" was like being branded with a lifelong curse. However, Jabez refused to let his past or his name define his future. He didn't just ask for a small favor; he asked for a "territory" expansion which means he wanted his influence and his life's work to grow. Most importantly, he asked for God’s Hand to be with him. He knew that without God's touch, success would be empty or lead to more sorrow.
When God Moves the Impossible
The Bible is full of moments where God stepped in to change the "natural" order of things. Take the Israelites crossing the Jordan River.
In Joshua 4:23-24-NLTwe see why God did it:
"For the Lord your God dried up the river right before your eyes, and he kept it dry until you were all across, just as he did at the Red Sea... He did this so all the nations of the earth might know that the Lord’s hand is powerful, and so you might fear the Lord your God forever."
This wasn't just about getting across a river; it was a sign that God can move physical and spiritual obstacles that seem unmovable. Even the minds of powerful people are not off-limits to Him.
Proverbs 21:1-NIV says:
"In the Lord’s hand the king’s heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him."
This means that if you are facing a "closed door" held by someone in authority, God can shift their heart as easily as a farmer directs a small stream of water.
A Shift in Your Destiny
Today, many of us feel stuck behind walls of debt, health issues, or family history. But the biblical truth is that God’s Hand can shift your reality in ways you can’t imagine. This "shift" isn't just about getting more money or a promotion; it’s about a total change in your path. It includes emotional healing, better relationships, and peace.
Walking in Faith
To live under God’s Hand, we need active faith. This means praying like Jabez but also walking forward like Joshua. It’s a partnership. We seek His direction daily, acknowledging that even the "ordinary" blessings in our lives are actually His handiwork.
As you move forward, have the courage to ask God for big things. When the Hand of God is over your life, your limitations no longer define you His power does.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, in the shadow of Your mighty Hand, we find strength and hope. Guide us, shift our circumstances, and lead us into the destiny You have ordained. May we always recognise Your powerful Hand in our lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
