Matthew 2:13 tells us about a very urgent moment. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said:
“Arise, take the young Child and His mother, flee to Egypt… for Herod will seek the young Child to destroy Him.”
Heaven did not wait for morning. The message came at night because danger had already begun. Herod was not just upset—he wanted to kill the Child. The promise of God was under attack.
But what stands out most is not the warning. It is Joseph’s response.
Immediate and Costly Obedience
Matthew 2:14 says:
“When he arose, he took the young Child and His mother by night and departed for Egypt.”
Joseph did not argue. He did not delay. He did not ask for another sign. He got up and left.
True obedience in the Bible is not only about doing the right thing. It is about doing it at the right time. Psalm 119:60 says, “I made haste, and did not delay to keep Your commandments.” That is exactly what Joseph did.
Think about what this meant for him. He had a young family. The journey would be long. Egypt was a foreign country. There would be expenses, uncertainty, and risk. Yet Joseph chose obedience over comfort.
And because of that obedience, prophecy was fulfilled: “Out of Egypt I called My Son” (Matthew 2:15, quoting Hosea 11:1). Just as God once brought Israel out of Egypt, He would now bring His Son out of Egypt. Jesus was fulfilling God’s bigger plan.
Timing Matters
Throughout the Bible, we see that timing is important.
Noah built the ark before the rain started (Genesis 6–7).
Moses led Israel out when God said it was time (Exodus 12–14).
The disciples left their nets immediately when Jesus called them (Matthew 4:20).
Delayed obedience can become disobedience.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 says there is “a time for every purpose under heaven.” Joseph understood that this was not just advice—it was a moment that required action.
Hearing God in a Noisy World
Today, our lives are full of noise—phones, news, social media, constant activity. But 1 Kings 19:12 reminds us that God often speaks in a “still small voice.”
Joseph heard God in a dream. It was quiet and personal. Jesus later said, “My sheep hear My voice” (John 10:27). The real question is not whether God speaks. The question is whether we are listening and willing to obey.
Obedience Has Hidden Results
Joseph probably did not realize that his quick obedience would help protect the Savior of the world. But obedience always has results that go beyond what we can see.
Hebrews 11:8 says Abraham obeyed even when he did not know where he was going. Faith moves before it understands everything.
Joseph’s life teaches us something simple but powerful: when God speaks, act. When He nudges your heart, move. Your obedience today may protect or bless your tomorrow.
Sometimes heaven moves at midnight.
Will we be ready to rise?
