How Do You Look Unto Jesus ?

Looking unto Jesus is a foundational principle in the Christian faith. It invites us to focus our gaze, our thoughts, and our hearts on the Lord and His Word. Understanding how to do this effectively can transform our spiritual journey, guiding us toward a life that truly reflects our belief in Him.

Looking to Jesus means directing our spiritual vision toward the Word of God, which reveals who He is. John 1:1 declares:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
This Scripture highlights the unity between the Lord Jesus and the Word of God. When we approach Scripture, we are not merely reading words on a page we are encountering Christ Himself.

James 1:23–24 compares the Word to a mirror. Just as a mirror reveals our outward appearance, God’s Word exposes the condition of our inner life. When we engage deeply with Scripture, we begin to see ourselves as God sees us our strengths, our weaknesses, and the areas that require growth.

Reflecting on the Word of God
James 1:25 provides a practical framework for engaging with the Word effectively. It outlines three essential practices:

1. Read It
To “look intently into the perfect law” means studying the Bible with focused attention. This is not a casual reading but a deliberate and thoughtful examination of what the Scripture says.

It involves asking questions:
  • What is God revealing here?
  • What does this teach me about His character?
  • How does this apply to my life?
Deep study opens the door to deeper understanding.

2. Review It
The verse continues, “and continues to do this.” This emphasizes consistency. Scripture is not meant for one-time exposure but for continual meditation.

Repeated engagement allows truth to sink deeper into the heart. Over time, the Word begins to shape our thinking and influence our decisions.

3. Remember It
“Not forgetting what they have heard” underscores the importance of memorizing Scripture. Even when we feel we have forgotten certain verses, they are often stored within us.

At the right moment, the Holy Spirit brings them back to remembrance offering direction, conviction, or encouragement exactly when needed.

Applying the Word
Looking unto Jesus is not limited to reading and reflecting. It also involves expectation believing that the Word will actively work in our lives.
1 Corinthians 9:24 reminds us:
“Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.”
Our Christian walk requires purpose and determination. We are called to pursue spiritual growth with discipline and passion, striving to live in a manner that honors Christ.

Faith becomes powerful when it moves from theory to practice.

Practical Steps
Here are some simple and effective ways to cultivate this habit:

1. Engage with Scripture Daily
Develop the discipline of daily Bible reading. You may begin with passages that relate to your present situation or read through a specific book chapter by chapter.

Consistency builds spiritual strength.

2. Reflect and Meditate
After reading, pause and reflect. Ask:
  • What is God saying to me today?
  • Is there an instruction to obey?
  • Is there a promise to believe?
Meditation allows the Word to move from the mind to the heart.

3. Memorise Scripture
Choose one verse each week to memorise. Write it down, keep it on your phone, or place it somewhere visible. Repetition helps internalise truth.

When challenges arise, stored Scripture becomes a source of stability and courage.

4. Put the Word into Action
Obedience completes the process. As you read, review, and remember Scripture, look for practical ways to live it out—through kindness, forgiveness, perseverance, and faith in difficult moments.

James reminds us that blessing comes to those who do what the Word says.

5. Share What You Learn
Growth deepens when shared. Speak about what God is teaching you whether in conversations, small groups, sermons, or social media. Teaching others reinforces your own understanding.

Fixing Our Eyes
Hebrews 12:2 encourages us:
“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”
To fix our eyes on Him means to remain focused despite distractions. It means turning our attention back to Him whenever circumstances attempt to shift our gaze.

When we consistently look to Jesus through His Word, our thoughts change, our attitudes mature, and our actions begin to reflect His character.

Looking unto Jesus is not a one-time decision; it is a daily discipline. As we practice it faithfully, we receive strength for the race, guidance for our steps, and encouragement for every season of life.

And ultimately, we run in a way that leads us to the eternal prize found in Him.

Prayer
1. Father, direct my heart into the love of Jesus and follow His perseverance.

2. Father, help me fight the good fight, finish the race and keep the faith in Jesus' name, I pray. Amen
