1. A Difficult Name to Carry
The Bible introduces Jabez with an unusual statement:
“Now Jabez was more honourable than his brothers, and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, ‘Because I bore him in pain.’” (1 Chronicles 4:9)
The name Jabez means pain or sorrow. His mother gave him this name because his birth had been very painful.
Imagine growing up with such a name.
Jabez had many brothers. Every time someone called his name, it reminded everyone of pain. It is very possible that his brothers and other people made fun of him because of it. Children can sometimes be very harsh with their words.
But the Bible makes a powerful statement right at the beginning: Jabez was more honourable than his brothers.
This shows us that even though his name carried a negative meaning, his character was different. His circumstances did not define the kind of person he chose to become.
2. Learning from the Story of Jacob
Jabez may have known the story of another man in the Bible—Jacob.
Jacob’s name also carried a negative meaning. The name Jacob means deceiver or supplanter. All his life, he carried the weight of that name.
But one night, Jacob had a life-changing encounter with God. The Bible tells us that he wrestled with God in prayer throughout the night.
That night changed everything.
God said to him:
“Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” (Genesis 32:28)
The name Israel means Prince with God.
In one moment, God transformed Jacob’s identity. His past no longer controlled his future.
From that day onward, Jacob’s life took a new direction.
3. God Shows No Favouritism
Perhaps Jabez heard this story and thought deeply about it.
If God could change Jacob’s life, then God could change his life too.
The Bible reminds us of an important truth:
“For He is not partial to princes, nor does He regard the rich more than the poor.” (Job 34:19)
God does not show favoritism. He does not bless one person while ignoring another.
What He did for someone in the past, He can do again.
This is a truth every believer must hold firmly in their heart. The same God who answered prayers in the Bible is still answering prayers today.
4. The Day Jabez Decided to Seek God
There must have come a moment in Jabez’s life when he said to himself, “Enough is enough.”
He realized something very important: if his life was ever going to change, God had to be the one to change it.
The Bible says:
“And Jabez called on the God of Israel.” (1 Chronicles 4:10)
This simple statement carries a powerful meaning.
Jabez prayed.
- He did not complain about his name.
- He did not argue with people.
- He did not blame his parents.
Instead, he turned to God.
5. What It Means to Call on the Lord
Calling on the Lord is another way of describing prayer.
Prayer is more than just speaking words. It is:
- Talking to God
- Spending time with Him
- Opening our hearts before Him
- Building a relationship with Him
Prayer is fellowship with God. It is communion with Him.
God Himself invites us to pray. The Lord says:
“Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things which you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)
This is a powerful promise.
When we pray sincerely, God can reveal things we never imagined. He can open doors we never expected.
6. Prayer Brings Breakthrough
Jabez understood something that many people forget.
Prayer brings breakthrough.
Prayer is where heaven meets earth. It is the meeting point between human weakness and divine power.
When a person prays, they are not alone anymore. God begins to move in ways we cannot see.
It has often been said:
More victories are won on our knees than on the battlefield.
Many of life’s greatest breakthroughs do not begin with action—they begin with prayer.
7. Seeking God First
Jesus gave His followers a powerful instruction about priorities in life.
He said:
“Do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:31–33)
Jesus was teaching us a simple but powerful principle:
When we put God first, He takes care of the rest.
Many people spend their lives chasing money, success, and security. But Jesus tells us that the better path is to seek God first.
When God becomes our priority, everything else begins to fall into place.
8. A Life That Is Not Ruled by Circumstances
A man or woman who seeks God diligently will never be completely controlled by circumstances.
Situations may change. Problems may come and go. But when a person stays close to God, they always have hope.
Jabez’s life reminds us of this truth.
He started life with a difficult name and painful circumstances. But instead of allowing those things to control his future, he turned to God in prayer.
And that decision changed everything.
God is still listening to prayers today. And anyone who seeks Him sincerely can experience His help, guidance, and breakthrough.
