Becoming a Channel of Grace

What Is Grace?
The simplest definition of grace is this: God giving us what we do not deserve.
We deserved the punishment of hell, yet God graciously bestowed upon us the gift of His Son.

The Bible reminds us:
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.”— Ephesians 2:8

Salvation and God’s forgiveness are free gifts. They are not earned by human effort, nor are they deserved. They flow from the heart of a loving and merciful God.

From Enemies to Reconciled
There was a time when we were far from God. Scripture says:
“Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.”— Colossians 1:21

Yet through the shed blood of Jesus Christ, everything changed. Through His sacrifice on the Cross, we were set free and reconciled to God.

Our sins were cancelled. The record of our guilt and punishment was removed through the blood of Jesus. What we deserved was judgment, but what we received instead was mercy and reconciliation.

When People Stop Serving
One day, a young man came to me and said, “I love serving the Lord, but I don’t like the people around me there; therefore I stopped serving the Lord.”

Sadly, these same words are being repeated in many places around the world today.

Many believers begin with passion and love for God, but eventually withdraw because of hurt, disappointment, or conflict with people.

This raises an important question: Why do people who genuinely love the Lord end up in this condition?

A Failure to Extend Grace
Often, the root issue is a failure to extend the same grace to others that we ourselves received from God.

The apostle Peter writes:
“Grace and peace be multiplied to you.”
— 2 Peter 1:2

Grace is meant to grow and multiply in our lives. But multiplication in the Kingdom of God follows a divine principle: what is given away increases.

The Principle of Multiplication in God’s Kingdom
Throughout Scripture, we see that multiplication happens only when something is released.

When Jesus fed the multitudes, the fish and loaves multiplied only after they were distributed.

When the widow followed the instructions of the prophet Elisha, the oil multiplied only as it was poured into vessels.

In the same way, grace multiplies in our lives when we extend it to others.

The Law of Giving
Luke 6:38 is often quoted in relation to financial giving:
“Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”

The principle here is simple: what you release returns multiplied.

This principle does not apply only to money. It also applies to mercy, forgiveness, kindness, and grace.

When you extend grace, grace multiplies in your life.

Law versus Grace
Under the Law, justice demanded strict punishment.

For example, the Law stated:
“He who kidnaps a man and sells him, or if he is found in his hand, shall surely be put to death.”— Exodus 21:16

According to this law, Joseph’s brothers deserved death because they kidnapped him and sold him into Egypt.

Yet when Joseph finally stood before them as a ruler in Egypt, he did not respond with vengeance. Instead, he chose mercy and gave them life.

Joseph responded with grace instead of judgment.

Give People What They Need
I once sensed the Spirit saying:
“Don’t give people what they deserve; give them what they need.”

When we give people what they deserve, we operate under the law.

But when we give people what they need—mercy, forgiveness, compassion—we operate under grace.

Under the law, there was condemnation and punishment.

But under grace, there is forgiveness, restoration, and redemption.

Living as People of Grace
As followers of Christ, we must remember that we ourselves are recipients of grace.

Every day we live, every blessing we enjoy, and every moment of forgiveness we experience is the result of God’s unmerited favor.

Therefore, the same grace that saved us should also flow through us to others.

When grace becomes the language of our lives, relationships are healed, hearts are restored, and the character of Christ becomes visible through us.
