“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (KJV)
Years ago, a young mother was caught in a fierce, blinding snowstorm while making her way across the hills of South Wales. Unable to escape the storm, she lost her life. However, when rescuers eventually found her, they discovered something remarkable.
Before she died, she had removed her outer clothing and carefully wrapped it around her baby. Then, using her own body as a shield against the freezing winds, she lay over her child until her last breath.
When the baby was unwrapped, he was alive and unharmed. That child grew up to become David Lloyd George, one of Great Britain's greatest prime ministers and statesmen. None of that would have been possible had his mother not willingly laid down her life to save him.
Her love was not merely spoken it was demonstrated through sacrifice. She expressed her love by giving.
God's Greatest Demonstration
What that mother did for her child beautifully reflects, in a far greater way, the love God has shown toward humanity.
John 3:16 declares:
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son..."
God did not simply tell us He loved us. He proved it.
He gave what was most precious to Him His one and only Son. He did not offer an angel, a possession, or something of lesser value. He gave His very best.
Love always reveals itself through sacrifice.
Love That Seeks
The beauty of John 3:16 goes even deeper.
God's gift was not for His own benefit. It was entirely for ours.
"...that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."
Everything about God's sacrifice was centred on our salvation, our restoration, and our eternal future.
This perfectly echoes the well-known words of Amy Carmichael:
"You can give without loving, but you cannot love without giving."
God's love was never self-centred. It reached outward. It sought our highest good, even at the greatest personal cost.
Love Is More Than a Feeling
Our generation often defines love by emotions, words, or personal happiness. Yet Scripture presents a much deeper picture.
Biblical love is not merely about what we feel—it is about what we willingly give.
It is not driven by the question, "What can I receive?" but rather, "How can I bless someone else?"
Love is concerned about another person's well-being. It desires to see others strengthened, encouraged, restored, and drawn closer to God.
- True love serves.
- True love sacrifices.
- True love gives.
Practical Expressions of God's Love
Every believer has opportunities each day to reflect God's heart.
- Call someone even if they never call you.
- Pray for those who may never pray for you.
- Encourage someone who cannot repay your kindness.
- Share a meal with a family in need, even if they are unable to return the favour.
- Forgive those who have hurt you.
- Give generously without expecting recognition.
- The Lord sees every unseen act of love.
- Nothing done out of genuine love ever escapes His notice.
Let Your Life Reflect God's Heart
It is easy to become consumed with what others can do for us. But Jesus calls us to a higher way of living.
Every time we remember the cross, we are reminded that love is not about taking it is about giving.
God demonstrated His immeasurable love by giving His Son so that we might receive eternal life.
As you go about your day, ask yourself:
"How can I become a blessing to someone today?"
Perhaps the greatest evidence that Christ lives within us is not merely what we say, but how willingly we give ourselves for the good of others.
Prayer
1. My Heavenly Father, I thank You for You loved us so much that You gave us Your Son so we could have eternal life.
2. Help me to extend this love to other people by my act of giving. Help me to be a huge blessing to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
2. Help me to extend this love to other people by my act of giving. Help me to be a huge blessing to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
